Racing in front of a track record crowd, Lucas Oil's Gary Phillips claimed victory at Darwin's Hidden Valley Drag Strip for the second consecutive year in his 1953 Studebaker Pro Slammer.
Gary qualified in the number 2 position with an off the trailer 5.721 at 251.91mph, which also doubled as a personal best elapsed time for the 47 year drag racing veteran, with 20 Australian Championships to his credit.
"The track crew at Hidden Valley did an outstanding job preparing the track. We took one look at the track and figured we would swing for the fence in the first run, and it definitely stuck. We were low ET for the round, and only got bumped down one spot in the later session", said Phillips.
After using the second qualifying session to test some ideas, which resulted in a personal best sixty foot time of .969 seconds, Gary and his Lucas Oil team would return to their recently found 5.70s tune up for the remainder of eliminations.
Gary proved that consistently quick runs are a winning combination and used a 5.77, 5.78 and 5.77 to eliminate his three competitors and once again claim the title of Nitro Up North event winner.
"Our 1953 Studebaker seems to love the Darwin facility. This is the third time since 2012 we have claimed the win (and our second in a row). We used our 5.30 funny car motor in the car for the event and learned a lot about car setup. It's been a dream to drive since installing the JRi shocks just two events ago, and has certainly displayed the results."
Using the event as a platform to thank departing sponsor Lucas Oil after 20 years of support, the team was thrilled to take home the victory in the final event in Lucas colours.
"We couldn't have thought of a better way to finish up our 20 year partnership. We won the first event with Lucas Oil on our car back in 1997, and also won the final one in 2017. It was a great way to book end one of the longest sponsorships in Australian history. A sincere...

Megan Meyer and sister, Rachel Meyer, competed together in the Top Alcohol Dragster Class at Heartland Park Topeka July 27-31stwith support from Meyer Truck Center Inc., Quality Structures Inc., and Up In Smoke BBQ Sauce. This was their second race this year racing side-by-side at their home track with the Randy Meyer Racing Team. Although Rachel claimed the runner-up finish at the NHRA National event, it was Megan who would take home the win at the Lucas Oil Regional race.
Rachel scored the number one qualifying spot with the quickest and fastest time of the three sessions, a 5.30 E.T. at 275 mph. Megan was not far behind in the third position with her 5.34 E.T. at 273 mph. With the two girls placed on opposite sides of the ladder, it was a perfect match for an all Meyer final round.
As the number one qualifier, Rachel faced Marty Thacker from Indiana for the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately Rachel had a slow reaction time, as Marty shot off the starting line first and never trailed for the win with a 5.41 E.T. to Rachel’s 5.34 E.T. Megan was up against the sixth qualifier, David Brounkowski, who encountered tire smoke and Megan powered down the track for the win with a 5.37 E.T. at 273 mph.
Going into the second round, Megan had to take down the newcomer, Mike Edstrom, who had just received his Top Alcohol Dragster NHRA license the day before eliminations. Megan got off the starting line first, but Mike got ahead of her down the track. Megan powered through to cross the finish line first, by a mere .003 seconds, approximately 14 inches.
Megan was then faced up against Marty, who defeated Rachel in round 1, for the finals. Marty had the advantage at the tree but was no match for Megan’s winning 5.30 E.T. at 274 mph. This was a...

Quality Structures, Inc, QSI, a leader in the construction of high quality buildings in the Midwest, will be the associate sponsor of the two Top Alcohol Dragsters in the Randy Meyer Racing Team for this weekend’s Central Regional race in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Topeka.
QSI built the Randy Meyer Racing shop located in Spring Hill, Kansas for the team in 2016. It is over 9,600 square feet and is used as a race shop, showroom, and storage for the many racing vehicles, trailers, parts and supplies used by the team. The building received the 2016 National Frame Builders Association Building Of The Year Award for it’s open interior, 28’ leans, and raised center aisle that is completely lined in white steel.
“The Randy Meyer Racing Shop building exemplifies the size and quality of the racing organization and I am proud to have helped with the project,” said Steve Morrison, QSI Sales Representative for Eastern Kansas. “The building is unique because of the size 85'x120'x20' and the fact that it is both post frame shop with a stick framed office and showroom area.”
“My favorite part of the race weekend experience is the time spent in the pit areas watching teams work together as families to make it all happen on the track.”
Driving for the Randy Meyer Racing Team this weekend will be championship-contender, Megan Meyer, and her little sister, Rachel Meyer. Megan has competed in eight NHRA races this year and holds three wins, while this will be Rachel’s second race for her in 2017.
"I'm looking forward to just having fun,” Rachel claimed. “I'm hoping the car will perform good but I'm nervous it might go up in smoke again first round much like last year. But, if it does, this time I will be prepared for it.”
“I'm excited to just have a weekend away with my family doing what we love. It doesn't matter if I win the whole race or not, but...
