Clutch vs. Converter

    It is the screw blower on a two step that is a killer of belts. It has less mass when spinning so it jumps around more. Haven't seen a two damage valve springs or other components.

    No expert here but if you tighten the crap out of the belt it lasts a long time on a screw with 8MM GT. Using a 1600 84GT PS belt and it is waaay tight when warm. Dozens of passes at 4500 RPM on the two step with 20 LBS of boost at the hit. Would like to know what the top runners are seeing for boost at the hit.

    No exact figures to be given but I can tell you it is over twice that. So maybe that is why you can make a belt last. We had more than 20 lbs on the hit with the roots blower.

    I have seen data logs with screws having 50 plus at the hit !!!!

    Not too surprised. Most of those guys are fully opening their injectors while mine is opening just about a 1/4" with an air throttle.

    Clutch vs Converter

    You guys are sure making it hard for me to be faithful to my Crower 3 disk pedal clutch. Because of yall and these successful stories about todays converter drives, I am starting to have a wandering eye towards a converter drive. THANKS, ITA!!! :rolleyes:

    Hi Tim,

    It is being painted in January and we are waiting on all of the new parts to get here. We will be out in either Oct or December of 2015 and will plan on running the full season in 2016. This will give me a little time to accrue some spare parts.

    I love my converter Tim, less maintenance, yearly expense, and more consistency if nothing else. Just have to learn a new timing curve and let the convertor do the work down low now. In an unlimited overdrive app we have slowed the blower down some and given it more timing at the hit so the blower is more efficient on the big end. The Chance NXS converters are amazing.

    I'll get you some pics when it starts going back together. New combo, new heads, new blower, new convertor, new center, upgrades out the wazoo! Should rock and roll!

    Belt life

    I bought a 3.5" Idler setup and went to 11mm belts. I buy them with 1 run from fuel teams all day long for cheap and could probably run 1 belt for 6 races if I didn't miss a tuneup. I won't try it because for the money it isn't worth it coming off and costing me a pass but I will be trying 6-7 passes per belt late next year.

    Or you could struggle for years with a clutch then find out you had fueling problems.
    My advise is buy O2 sensors

    I feel the same as mike I run a converter and would never switch..it is faster on et and mph I also use a chance converter this is on our ta/d car

    now for a challenge my front motor car is going to also run a converter and it will be a nitro deal..people say it "can't be done" just watch:)..Dave

    I used to run a clutch, and this will be the first converter. I opted for a Neal Chance lockup so I'm sure there is a lot to learn...I won't miss replacing clutches though.

    I have always ran a clutch.
    Ram 2 disc 8 inch.bronze floaters.
    Liberty 5 speed.
    125 inch solid altered .
    BBC 632 NA..COMP A/A
    6.9@ 192
    My crew chief asked me if a converter car would be quicker ?
    Its closed season so I had more time to think.
    The et would be exactly the same.
    Clutch is faster & quicker.
    Converter would make turning car around quicker, this would leave more time to play with fuelling, got grid so mess about with individual cylinder timing.more time to study racepak so can find gains in other areas.could even have time for the driver to get some exercise and make the car lighter .
    There is a lot more to a successful race meeting than just the timing ticket.

    i might have a Bruno with a 2 speed with reverser and converter coming up for sale if my buddy don't take it all is also fresh..reason for selling went to a clutch
