Pro Top Outlaws Prepare for Fourth Season

The Pro Top Outlaws, formally IHRA Pro Outlaw, formally Super Eliminator are entering their fourth season bigger and better than ever. These sportsman racers all run blown alcohol or nitrous engines and usually dip into the 3.80's in the eighth mile. The club runs thirteen races a year and have signed up ten tracks so far for the 2005 season. "We have quite a few tracks that ask us to come back every year because the crowds love to hear those blowers wind up" Says club president, Ron Bales.

The thirty member group will kick off the season at Emerald Coast Dragway in Holt, Florida on April 2nd with an eight car field and wind up the current season schedule September 17th at Kil-Kare Dragway in Xenia, Ohio. The tour will be highlighted by a sixteen car field that will headline the Kil-Kare Buckeye Nationals for the fourth consecutive year on August 16th, which is always the quickest and largest event on the tour. Ron went on to say,"Last year we had wheelstanding dragsters running in the 3.80's and a couple of the guys forgot where the end of the track was. We broke a few cars, but nobody got hurt."

PTO has always run IHRA top dragster rules and are the fastest Sportsman class on the planet; however, this year an exciting change has been thrown into the mix as IHRA legal alcohol funny car combinations are allowed if they run an altered body. This will provide racers an alternative place to go since IHRA cut the funny car field from 16 to 8 cars.

Once again PTO will provide a championship points fund and contingency program. For more information on race dates, booking information, or to join go to

 For 2005 the World Alcohol Racers will not be restricting the A-Fulers and will allow them to run 100% Nitro. It is the goal of the World Alcohol Racers to split the two classes and run them separately, by 2006, and showcase the fuelers as the Kings of WAR. We will need two things to make this happen. First off we need high car counts, secondly we need a sponsor for this "PRO NITRO" class. We are currently working on sponsors to move in this direction. If we have enough participation in this class we will make it happen.

Carrying the Torch

POMONA, Calif. – Ashley Force, driver of the Castrol/Hot Wheels A/Fuel dragster carried the torch for the John Force Racing team after it’s Funny Car drivers – John Force, Eric Medlen and rookie Robert Hight – lost in the first round of competition at the 45th Annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals at Pomona Raceway.

The 22-year old California girl advanced to the semi final round of competition before being defeated by Steve Federlin. Force recorded a 5.38 second elapsed time but fell short to Federlin’s 5.32 elapsed time.

“We are really happy with our performance this weekend. We qualified second and made it to the semis,” said Ashley. “Our biggest struggle was adjusting to the new fuel rule.” (Beginning in 2005 the NHRA capped the maximum of nitromethane for the A/Fuel dragsters at 98% instead of 100%).

“All and all I am pretty happy with this weekend. We’ve improved with every run today and that’s that,” said crew chief, Jerry Darien.

In the first round Ashley defeated Larry Miersch by covering the quarter mile in 5.48 seconds. Force then moved on the defeat Robert Perkins in the second round by running a 5.41 second elapsed time.

In 2004 this event was Force’s first outing in an A/Fuel dragster. She qualified fifth and advanced to the second round of competition.

Sportsman coverage of the 45th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals will air on ESPN 2 on Sunday, February 27th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. (E.T.).

It always RAINS in Southern California!

Pomona, CA. - This past weekend's NHRA / POWERADE Drag Racing Series National Event at Pomona Raceway. just outside of Los Angeles was the first Event of the year for the Torco Race Fuels / Top Alcohol Dragster of two time Division 3 Champion Jeff Wilson.

Wilson, from Winfield, Mo., was not very pleased after qualifying 9th with a 5.55 in weather conditions that were only ideal for ducks for the second year in a row. They received one qualifying session Thursday which turned out to be your typical first run of the year. Friday completely rained out which left the Team with only one opportunity to qualify, of which they did. "This was not only our first event of the year, but our first time out since October of last year. We made some hardware changes over the winter and it appears that we have a few gremlins hiding in the valvetrain that need to be hunted down prior to the next event.". stated Wilson. "This is the reason we went to Pomona, so we could get on the track early to get a run a the points. Our goal is to stay in the top 10 all season."

"We are very grateful to have our same Team back from last year, especially a group that works very good together and has the passion for our sport like this Team does. We were able to step it up and fix the motor after our first qualifying session and qualify under pressure because of Teamwork." stated Wilson "We lost in the quarter finals even though we had the starting line advantage. The motor started going away about 800 feet and we lost by a margin of .0175 of a second or a distance of about 6 feet." stated Wilson.

Wilson Racing is already preparing for the next event in Houston in 3 weeks and wants to keep focused on all the positive that they have...
