Duane Shields returned to Atco Raceway, New Jersey's premier racing facility after a much deserved four week break. Twelve Top Alcohol Dragsters showed up for the Lucas Oil Regional event with Duane Shields in the PEAK Dragster sliding into the number one qualifying position with a very respectable 5.23 at 278 MPH.

I round one, Duane took on up and coming driver Tiffany Januik. As the light turned green, it was Duane out of the gate first with an 0.059 to Januik's 0.075. Duane never looked back as he had Januik covered by a tenth of a second and took the win with a 5.40 at 274 MPH to Januik's 5.50 at 263 MPH to move on to the semis.

In the semis, Duane raced friendly rival Jackie Fricke. At the hit Duane lost traction and smoked the tires resulting in an abandoned run. "The car slowed down in round one after running strong all weekend including some pre-race testing. So, we gave the car some additional power before the semifinals and it spun the tires as a result. But we qualified number one which I have not done in a while and gained another round of points so it was an alright weekend" Duane said.

From Atco the team returns to national event competition beginning in Brainard. "We can't claim any more regional points so we'll have to wait and see how everyone else dose at any remaining regional events. We will now concentrate on national events beginning with Brainard which I'm looking forward to. Matt Sackman entered last weekend’s Burndown at Sundown at Route 66 Raceway with just a handful of Top Alcohol Dragster passes under his belt. Late Sunday evening, he left the event with five additional passes, the No. 1 qualifier award and the NHRA North Central Region event victory.

“To be able to qualify No. 1 and win the race in my debut is pretty unbelievable,” said Sackman, a cylinder head specialist on Don Schumacher Racing’s Antron Brown-driven Matco Tools/U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster. “It definitely shows there’s light at the end of the tunnel, that all of the hard work is worth it. This opportunity will hopefully lead to more opportunities in the future. I’m just very fortunate that everything worked out the way it did.”

Driving one of the potent Randy Meyer Racing entries, Sackman, 25, kicked off his Top Alcohol Dragster debut Friday evening with a 5.26-second pass at 275 mph. A strong 5.31 at 274 mph followed during Saturday’s rain-shortened qualifying, but it was the first pass that held up for the top spot out of the 13 cars trying to qualify for the eight-car field.

“I knew Randy had the car running well because Justin Ashley qualified No. 1 in it at Indy the week before,” said Sackman, whose teammate, Julie Nataas, qualified No. 2. “Running that 5.26 in hot air on the first pass definitely got my attention. I couldn’t believe the guys when they told me it ran 5.26 at 275.”

Sackman notched his first Top Alcohol Dragster round win Saturday evening when he used a .048 reaction time and 5.326 at 274.39 to defeat J.P. Gutierrez and his supercharged entry.

“It felt great to get that first win light out of the way,” Sackman admitted. “Both of my qualifying passes were singles, so first round was my first time driving an A/Fuel car with another car in the other lane. I was fairly nervous about that because I didn’t want to mess up my routine or hang JP out. Fortunately, it ended up working out.”

When the Martin’s made the decision to step away from Nostalgia Funny Car racing at the end of the 2017 season, a lot of people thought they were done with drag racing. “We had just completed a test session at Auto Club Famoso Raceway with the Speed Racer in September of 2017. My husband had just started to make the tuning decisions and the car was showing results. “On the way home from that test session Will and I talked and I heard him say how the class as a whole has changed.” Before he built the nostalgia car, his original dream was to expand upon his previous success in alcohol racing and move up to Top Alcohol Funny Car said team President Cindy Martin”. JOLIET, Ill. (July 9, 2018) – Top Dragster driver and Top Fuel crew member Matt Sackman will make his NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster debut this weekend at Route 66 Raceway’s Burndown at Sundown NHRA Division 3 event, July 13-15. With support from Gemini Farms and Hangsterfer’s Metalworking Lubricants, Sackman will drive a nitromethane-injected A/Fuel dragster out of the Kansas-based Randy Meyer Racing camp.

“Entering a race in Top Alcohol Dragster is something my dad and I have always wanted to do, but my race schedule and the regional race schedules just never lined up,” said Sackman, 25, who earned his Top Alcohol Dragster license after the Las Vegas national event in November of 2015. “This year we realized our home race was on one of my off weekends from the NHRA Mello Yello Series schedule, then Randy had one of his cars available, so it worked out great.”

Sackman will drive the Meyer-built Randy Meyer Racing entry typically fielded by Justin Ashley, who sits in the No. 11 spot in the NHRA Lucas Oil Series national points standings with a regional event victory at Virginia in April.

“I feel very lucky, honestly,” said Sackman, a cylinder head specialist on Antron Brown’s Matco Tools/U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster. “Randy has one of the best A/Fuel programs out there. DELAWARE, Ohio (July 8) -- Top Alcohol Dragster pro Troy Coughlin Jr. raced to a runner-up finish Sunday at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Summer Spectacle at Lucas Oil Raceway, highlighting a weekend that included a third-round appearance by his sister Paige, who competes in Super Comp. Across the country in New Hampshire, Jeg Coughlin Jr. took an early exit from the sixth annual NHRA New England Nationals.

"Considering we weren't even qualified until the last session, to have ended the day as runner-up says so much about this team," Troy Jr. said. "Rich McPhillips, Rich Jr., Duke Roney, Andy Good, Charlie Wrotten and Justin Beaver, they're true racers. They want to win and they're willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Sunday's finish marked the third time this season that Troy Jr. has driven the McPhillips Racing Top Alcohol Dragster to the trophy round. He previously won the Norwalk divisional event and was runner-up at the Norwalk national event.

"The guys worked so hard this weekend to get us up to speed and things just clicked for us today," said Troy Jr., who qualified fifth with a 5.376 at 278.17 mph. "In the final we shook the tires a little and it wouldn't recover in time to get back in front and try to win. Still, I'm incredibly proud of the day and the race we put together."

Paige had her best outing of the year in her JEGS.comSuper Comp dragster, winning two rounds before losing a very close race in the third elimination session. Lebanon Valley, NY - Duane Shields in the PEAK A/Fuel Dragster added a third victory to his successful 2018 season. Duane defeated Karen Stalba in the final round at the scenic Lebanon Valley Dragway in upstate New York.

Duane qualified in the top half of the field with a 5.42 at 270 MPH to land third in the qualifying order. The popular driver from Boulder City, Nevada, moved through eliminations by first taking on Richard St. Pierre in round one. At the hit, St. Pierre was late leaving the starting line giving Duane a big advantage. At the top end it was Duane taking the win with a 5.49 at 271 MPH to St. Pierre’s 5.62 at 252 MPH.

In the semi-finals, Duane took on Dan Mercier. As the lights came down, Duane was out of the gate first with an .053 to Mercier’s .095. At the stripe it was all PEAK as Duane chalked up a trip to the final round with a 5.54 at 269 MPH to Mercier’s 7.70 at 114 MPH.

In the final round, Duane met up with Karen Stalba who qualified fifth with a 5.50 so it looked to be a close race on paper. As the dragsters left the starting line, Duane once again got the edge with an 0.069 to Stalba’s close 0.072. Duane was able to keep the lead and take the win with a 5.43 at 269 MPH to Stalba’s distant 5.99 at 236 MPH. “My team did a great job in 90 plus degree temperatures today. Go PEAK!" Duane remarked following the race.

During the event there was a bad crash that hospitalized one of the PEAK Team's fellow racers. "DJ cox was involved in a top end accident. Our thoughts and prayers go to him and his family" Duane said.

In the finals at Summit Motorsports Park for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Megan Meyer, Olathe, Kansas, took home the win in Top Alcohol Dragster for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Driving for the Randy Meyer Racing Team, Megan had a few setbacks during qualifying on Friday and Saturday, and lost their second session because of the multiple rain delays. Their efforts of a 5.25-seconds and 5.28-seconds set Megan up as the No. 3 qualifier.

Megan took out Jeff Veale in the opening round, followed by a single pass in the second round of eliminations before defeating Dan Page in the semifinals, all running within the mid-5.20s range. Meyer ran 5.320-seconds at 277.94 mph in her final round victory over home state racer Troy Coughlin Jr., who clocked in at 5.369 seconds, 275.67 mph.

“I was slow getting out of the gate, and we almost lost on a holeshot because of it,” said Megan. “For some reason my car slowed down on the track and we only ran a 5.32 at 277 mph – our worst run of the weekend, but I was lucky enough that we pulled ahead within the last 300 feet to get the win. I saw his yellow wing out of the corner of my eye going down the track, and I was screaming in my head to go faster; I did not want to lose after we have been doing so good, but then it disappeared after 1000 feet and I had just enough room to get around TJ and get the win by .001 of a second.”

With this win, Megan currently sits in the top position for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series National Points and hopes to carry the momentum into the second half of the season. Megan’s next race will be at her home track, Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, Kansas for the Central Regional event.

Corey Michalek realized a dream Monday.

The Top Alcohol driver made two passes in Pat Dakin’s Top Fuel dragster at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio as part of the licensing process.

“It was a heck of a day,” said Michalek, 30. “I’m eternally grateful that Pat Dakin gave me an opportunity to achieve a dream of standing on the gas in a Top Fuel car, for Scott Graham (Dakin’s crew chief), giving me a full race car to license in and see if I had what it takes to go to the stripe, and for the rest of the Commercial Metal Fabricator’s team for their time, support, and guidance to help me through the process today. I can’t overemphasize just how big of a deal this was for me.”

Michalek’s first pass was 4.14-second at 226 mph, and it was a run where he shut off at halftrack. The second run was a full pass and he had a 3.84-second elapsed time at 310 mph.

“You hear so many people talk about how intense the acceleration is in these cars,” Michalek said. “I remember the jump from Super Comp to A-Fuel was substantial. I anticipated the same from A-Fuel to Top Fuel, but I don’t know if I was accurately understanding how drastic it would be. It was one of the most intense experiences I have ever had in my entire life. When it gets out to about 400 feet and the clutch locks up it is like going through the Twilight Zone. It is unbelievable how hard that thing hooks up.”

Michalek is upgrading his license from an alcohol dragster license. He was unsure if the passes he made Monday would be enough to get a Top Fuel license. If not, he will finish the process another time.

“We started the process of exploring options within the next level (Top Fuel),” Michalek said. “That Top Fuel car is pulling harder at any point during the run than the most aggressive acceleration during a run in an A-Fuel car. I thought I was prepared for it, but until you actually feel it, no way. It was a blur.”

Coughlin didn't take long to show his appreciation to Bryson. Just days after signing his new deal, he drove to victory at the annual Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser in Norwalk, Ohio. It was the 13th career victory for the third-generation pro and his first in TAD. He's also won races in Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Pro.
