PSI C vs Whipple A980

    Just wondering how my A980 compared to a PSI C for a outlaw pro mod and who can freshen up the rotors on the whipple

    You can send it back to Whipple. The Whipple displaces more displacement per revolution then the PSI C. If you use the search and look around there are exact values floating around.

    The Whipple A980 displacement is 601 cubic inches per blower revolution (9.80 liters/rev) where the PSI 210-C displacement is 476 cubic inches per rev (210 mm diameter). They are both Lysholm screw blowers and have great efficiency compared to any Roots style blower (standard or high helix). I guess it comes down to safety and how fast you can spin them (the overdrive rules/limits). Obviously the PSI would need more overdrive to deliver the same total air flow as the Whipple at any RPM.

    Here is what Roger from PSI posted a few years ago:

    In an attempt to clarify the questions being asked and answered on this forum regarding screw blower displacement let me clarify and attempt to help anyone interested in this information.

    PSI "D" is 422 cu.in.per/rev or 6.752 liters per/rev

    PSI "C" is 476 cu.in. per/rev or 7.616 liters per/rev

    Whipple R980 & A980 is 612.5 cu.in. per/rev or 9.8 liters per/rev

    So if you look at SFI max overdrive based on safety and then parity based on swept volume per/rev in 1996 this is how NHRA wrote there rules,

    Top Alcohol Dragster,

    PSI "D" 422 cu.in. x 2.15 or 115% = 907.3

    Whipple 601 cu.in. x 1.52 or 52% = 913 (.6% advantage in swept volume as it was wrote however based on the math 9.8 liters per/rev it should have read 612.5 cu.in. x 1.52 or 52% = 931 (2.6% advantage in swept volume)

    Top Alcohol F/C,

    PSI "D" 422 cu.in. x 2.25 or 125% = 949.6

    Whipple 601 cu.in x 1.60 or 60% = 961.6 (1.2% advantage in swept volume however just as before based on the math 9.8 liters or 612.5 x 1.60 = 980 (3.2% advantage in swept volume)

    ADRL Rules limit the Whipple to 1.60 over. As stated above, that's 961.6 ci with overdrive factored. Working backwards through the math, that's the equivalent to 2.02 over on a C blower or 2.28 over on a D blower. You can turn a C blower 2.28 over in ADRL, so that would give you 1085.3. That is a 13% increase in air flow.

    I am not familiar with the Whipple, but when I talked to Norm years ago, and he came out with the new design that redesigned the front bearings and allowed the air a straight path down to the bottom of the rotors. He told me in testing the new design it actually supercharged the supercharger, and they were actually getting more than 100 percent efficiency out of the new blower. It was hard for me to believe but that is what he told me.

    My point is if this does happen, how do you calculate that into the equation?

    Can you even get a whipple certified? I thought that they quit giving them the sfi tag years ago.
