THIS WAS A RUNNING ENGINE. Had started engine, ran and checked timing etc...Everything was great and all the sudden engine was running and idling and just died. Tried to start and engine will start but instantly dies every time. Got brand new coil. Sent points box back to MSD and it checked out fine. Got freshly checked points box and brand new coil and engine does same thing, starts and dies. Everything is properly grounded. REMEMBER THIS WAS A RUNNING ENGINE. Any ideas what it could be?

    mag

Just a thought but make sure that the key way to the drive gear isn't broke on the bottom of the mag.

Let me ask this. You say that it will start but then stops. If you keep squirting alcohol in with the squirt bottle can you keep it running. Have you checked that the fuel pump drive shaft hasn't broken.

Already took switch wire off coil and same result. Points box grounded, coil grounded. The thing was running and just quit.

Are you using a crank trigger or the mag pickup?

Re- check rotor phasing. Make sure it is at your timing , say 26 deg, pointed should be just ahead of no one spark plug on cap. Sometimes , on my MBR motor , it seems like if I try to rotate the mag backwards to far when setting initial phasing the rotor jumps backwards to the next free spot. If that makes any sense, lol. I have a certain spot I set my mag to clear the valve cover.

Are you using any kind of timing control like a six shooter? Low battery will not allow it to run.

Disconnect any timing controllers and run it straight mag, lower to upper plugged into itself on the generator, and generator plugged straight into the points box.

If it's a psi check it's not a broken quill shaft.

Check your blower shaft that will cause it to start and die.

Sorry everyone, my ignorance was the problem. Seems both idle adjustment screws had dropped off there stops and butterflies were closed all the way. I would open butterflies to shoot some alcohol in and I guess that gave it enough air to start, but would immediately die. That was a long ordeal chasing electrical problems that were not there. Thank's for everyone's input.

    Switch

I have seen bad mag kill or ignition switches do what you are experiencing.

    Best wishes,
