    Taylor’s Tune-Up Tops in Topeka

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor’s Plumbing Concepts Camaro Top Alcohol Funny Car came off a Quarter-Final showing at Brainerd, Minnesota, before heading to Heartland Park Topeka for this weekend’s Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series contest. Topeka’s new racing surface was not as much of a challenge as teams originally thought. Qualifying got underway on Friday evening as the temperature remained in the mid 80s, corrected altitude was 2,863 feet, and track temperature was 123 degrees. Though Dennis Taylor was the last car to test the track, he came out swinging with a wheels-up launch and rocketed to the number one spot with a safe 5.91-second run at 239 miles per hour.

The second qualifying session on Friday evening saw totally different conditions, as the air temperature was 69 degrees and a track temp cooled to 92. Crew Chief Ora Vasquez knew that would make his job easier, but he refused to be greedy as Dennis reeled off a 5.890 at 239mph, landing him in the third position.

For Saturday’s final qualifier, Top Alcohol racers rolled to the starting line at high noon, as the mercury rested at 80 degrees and the track temp stood at 125. Vasquez again proved his experience, providing Dennis with a consistent 5.84-second blast at just under 244mph, which landed them in the fourth position.

Round 1 of Eliminations pitted Taylor with the defending TA/FC Champion, Cy Chesterman, who managed a psychic .002 reaction time. Dennis was also on his game, reacting to the green light in .042-seconds and made up Chesterman’s difference in the first 200 feet of track, to record a winning 5.84 to a losing 5.93.

Dennis had lane choice over Iowa’s Vern Moats in Round 2 and cruised to a 5.83-second victory. Bernie Harrington also prevailed on his side of the ladder, setting up an all-California final. Dennis explained, “I’ve been working on my reaction times recently and it’s been paying off.” Truer words were never spoken, as a great .059 reaction time put him ahead of Harrington all the way. Taylor’s numbers were his quickest and fastest of the weekend – 5.809 at 245.45mph, while recording his third Divisional event win of the 2005 season.

Following Topeka, Dennis and his Plumbing Concepts crew will regroup at home and set their sights on Fallon, Nevada, for a September Pacific Division 7 battle.
