Weaver loses close race in quarterfinals

SONOMA, Calif. - To the average person watching an average sport, .029 of a second would be pretty insignificant. But NHRA Drag Racing is far from the average sport. At this past weekend's Fram-Autolite Nationals presented by Supercuts at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., veteran Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners team qualified No. 1 for the field, but lost a close match to Larry Miner in round two, where both drivers posted the two quickest times of the round.

Weaver, from Orting, Wash., qualified the Bob DeVour tuned Camaro in the top spot with a 5.631 second elapsed time at 253.99 mph. In round one, Weaver took out Mike Drake with a 5.647 at 254.95 mph. In his quarterfinal match with Miner, Weaver grabbed a sizable holeshot with a .036 reaction time to Miner's .064, but couldn't hold off Miner's hard-charging 5.622 at 253.66 mph with his own 5.679 at 253.90 mph. The margin of victory was a mere .029 of a second.

"Like we said before, anytime you run Miner and [Randy] Goodwin it's tough," said Weaver. "We both made good runs, ours fell off a bit, and he sped up. The team was happy to take the No. 1 qualifying spot, but we still wished we could have went further in the race. We're definitely making good progress."

Team owner Ron Meer shares the team's optimism and is looking forward to their next outing.

"I am extremely proud of the effort the team and driver put forth this weekend," stated Meer. "This team is really coming together, and qualifying No. 1 out here on the West Coast is winning a race in itself. I can't help but think this weekend was a sign of good things to come out of this team."

The next race for the MCP team will be the biggest of them all, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park on Labor Day weekend.

well it seem john weaver can't get that little bit of luck every driver needs to win one of these things, but with the strong performances he's shown, i say it's only a matter of time! Keep it up MCP and crew and GOOD LUCK!
