Weaver looking to stay on a roll in Seattle

KENT, Wash. - Former NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion John Weaver will be looking to stay on a roll in only his third race behind the wheel of the Meer Capital Partners Top Alcohol Funny Car during this weekend's CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at Pacific Raceways just outside of Seattle. Since being selected as driver, Weaver and team have made the final of both events they have entered on the Division 7 Lucas Oil trail, scoring a win in Bakersfield, Calif., and a runner-up in Sonoma, Calif. This weekend will be the first national event for the trio of Weaver, car owner Ron Meer and tuner Bob DeVour.

Weaver, from Orting, Wash., hopes with more runs under his belt in the MCP Camaro, he can hone his skills to this car. The car was previously piloted by Pro Mod journeyman Kirk Kuhns and then by former Top Fuel World Champion and current Funny Car standout Gary Scelzi.

"I have real high expectations for the weekend," said Weaver. "Bob has made some changes to the car that should make it even better. I think we'll do real good and I'm really looking forward to the next two weeks. Seattle is a good track, so we should be able to run some good times. As I get more seat time in this car, I learn more how it reacts to different things. So far, I've only got ten runs in this car, so I think we've done well as a team considering."

"To make one of these cars run good, you have to have runs," added DeVour. "We're still in the process of making runs and collecting data for this car. So we're going to go out there and make some runs and have a good time."

Car owner Meer is pleased with how the team has done this season, and hopes to keep the momentum up in Seattle.

"We are pleased with our performance this season, and especially the last couple races with John behind the wheel," stated Meer. "He has really taken to the car quickly. Kirk and Gary both did excellent jobs behind the wheel, but they had other commitments to tend to. The car has run with some of the best cars in the country on the divisional level, so we hope to continue that trend this weekend in national event conditions. We're all very excited and up beat heading into this weekend and the next in Sonoma."

There will be no rest for the team after Seattle as they hit the road for the final leg of the NHRA Western Swing for the Fram-Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, Calif., next weekend. This weekend's qualifying will begin on Friday with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday morning. Eliminations will begin Saturday evening, with final eliminations concluding the event on Sunday.
