    Taylor Scores Runner-Up Finish

ANAHEIM, CA — Dennis Taylor’s Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car team won in Oregon just two weeks ago. Here in Washington, the defending event champion of the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals came out of the box at Pacific Raceways on Friday to pace the field with a fine 5.66-second qualifying run to secure the number one spot. Due to wet weather early in the day, Friday’s second scheduled session was canceled, forcing the 19 TA/FC competitors to settle for only two chances to qualify. Having found consistency of late, Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, tuned Dennis to a 5.65-second lap on Saturday which eventually stood for third best in the 16-car qualified field.

Taylor went into Saturday’s first round of eliminations with an appointment to face number-14 qualifier, Randy Parker. Dennis commented, “I think the driver got a little excited there and left the starting line with the rpm up higher than normal. The car got loose and used lots of race track. I pedaled it once and fortunately saved the run. I’m surprised it ran as quick as it did (5.74) for all the driving I had to do.” That set the stage for Sunday’s tangle with Division 7 rival, Steve Gasparrelli. Both drivers were ready, running 5.688 to 5.689, and Taylor took the exciting win. Dennis had a .003-second advantage at the starting line and ran .001 quicker. The actual margin of victory was approximately a foot and a half.

The semi-finals found Taylor matched up with Brian Hough, the racer who beat him at the season-opening Winternationals. Needing to settle the score, Dennis lit the win light running 5.61 to Hough’s 5.73. However, in the other pair, Clint Thompson won also, securing lane choice for the final by a mere .006-seconds.

The final round pitted the Plumbing Concepts Camaro against the number one qualifier for all the marbles. Having run quicker in each successive round, Dennis won the battle on the starting line (.055 to .075) but then overpowered the racing surface and drifted out of the groove towards half-track. Thompson ran straight and true to the finish line, recording a 5.61 to Taylor’s 5.72. Looking at the weekend, Dennis said, “We don’t enjoy losing, but I’m pleased with our consistency and we came away with more points than our fellow Division 7 racers. Congratulations to Clint and his team. Those guys ran great here.”

Watch the CARQUEST Nationals Top Alcohol show on ESPN2 at 9:00pm (PST) 8/1/05. The Plumbing Concepts Camaro races again next weekend during the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California.
