Weaver looking to 'cash in' in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Former Division 7 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champ John Weaver and the Meer Capital Partners team will be looking to 'cash in' during this weekend's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series closer at 'The Strip' at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. While Ron Meer's team comes into the event with a hot hand, it will take more to win than just having some aces at this table.

Weaver and the team enter the event after competing in the Jegs Sportsman All-Stars event and Ameriquest Home Mortgage Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago last month. While the team posted respectable numbers en route to a semifinal finish in the All-Stars event, they were plagued by a fuel system gremlin all weekend. Now that the team's veteran tuner Bob DeVour has had several weeks to analyze the car from front to rear, they hope to return to the form that got them to the finals of the biggest race of the year, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indy.

"This weekend will be tough no doubt," said Weaver, of Orting, Wash. "With the cars that will be there this weekend, it would be a tough national event, and you only have eight spots for a divisional. There won't be any room for error. I'm sure Bob and the guys will give me a good hot rod, I just need to do my job when the light turns green."

Team owner Ron Meer is excited about the challenge this weekend presents.

"I've always enjoyed a challenge, and this weekend will be a challenge to say the least," stated Meer. "There will be no easy rounds in this weekend's event. All eight of the cars that qualify for this show and a few that don't qualify will be cars capable of winning anywhere, anytime. We enjoy the challenge, that's what its all about. The team gets pumped up about these big races, and just puts forth that much more effort. Doing well at one of these races just makes it that much sweeter."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
