Jones enters Houston with points lead

BAYTOWN, Texas – Former two-time NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion Jimmy Jones heads into this weekend’s Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Houston Raceway Park hot off a win in Great Bend, Ks., two weeks ago. The win also gave him the points lead over contenders Lee Callaway and defending Champ Steve Harker, who are tied for second.

Jones, who is a practicing pharmacist in Cleburne, Texas, when not drag racing attributes his return to his ‘normal’ form to changes made in the clutch department.

“We went back to some old clutch discs we had,” said Jones. “We also found a problem at about the same time that we corrected. It kind of leaves you scratching your head – which one was it?”

“We ran some good numbers at the Dallas divisional, but the parachute deployed early,” Jones continued. “Then Great Bend is one of those tracks where you could just about leave the clutch at home. You just have to get down that track. We enjoy racing there and have had very good luck there.”

Despite having the point lead now, Jones is quick to point out that gives him no advantage on the track.

“It’s nice to be in the lead,” Jones commented. “But there are some tough competitors in this division. Right now it’s a pretty tight battle between us, Callaway and Harker. That’s not to say someone else won’t get hot and make a run at it. We just hope to go out and have a solid outing and make a good showing for our sponsors Painless Products, Comp Cams, Vistaplex Video Surveillance, Royal Purple Oil and Skinz Wraps.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations conclude the event on Sunday.
