Intake Port O-rings

    I'm talking the o-ring between the intake and the head.

    Are these pretty fool proof?

    What kinds of trick and tips do you use to make these work well?

    Do you superglue them in so they don't fall into the lifter valley when taking the intake manifold off?

    We did it to our intake and it works good, we just put on some heavy lube like anti-sieze, ARP lube even STP to keep the O-ring in place while putting it together.

    I have been known to superglue them in the slot. Just a small dab top and bottom down in the slot to keep them from falling out. Then I put the oring in the slot then spay them with silicone and put it together. Not sure I would put anti-sieze on them:confused: They can't sieze up

    O-ring

    Anti-size and ARP lube have metal grit in it. If you don;t have O-ring lube, use white lith. grease.or if you can get it use Loctite 105 ass. lube. They have a tendency to stick and get a little chewed up looking when pulled apart dry. Just some ideas. dON

    Do they wear out often, easily torn, anything like that?

    How far out does the o-ring rubber stick, like .010"?

    That seems about right, they are pretty tough, gone a couple years before changing.
    I smear a coat of grease or some wd40 upon assembly to help cut friction on assembly

    Have you ever had issues with the machined surfaces of the head and intake not matching well and consequently having a boost leak?

    Non-matching surfaces

    The only time I have had a problem with the o-rings sealing between the faces of the intake to manifold was when I bought a used intake that had been damaged and rewelded. The seller failed to tell me that the faces were not "straight" and had pulled in the welding process. Other than that, I have had no problems with the o-rings sealing. of course, sometimes a "boost" leak is hard to "see". New o-rings on my AJ2 fuel heads protrude about .030 but after use, only about .020. I also use a slight smear of motor oil or trans oil on the head surface to help with the seating. I have never had an o-ring fall out or get displaced from the groove. Just my experiences.

    Thanks for the .030 stick out measurement, thats more than I have been doing on the intake to adaptor plate and blower to adaptor plate, are you confident they stick out .030?

    I use 1/8" o-ring, are your port o-rings also 1/8"?

    No, I am NOT confident about the .030 protrusion from the face. You really should verify that dimension with the head manufacturer and it matters what OD the oring is and what durometer of the oring material. I think my head
    orings are larger than .125. I did make the mistake of cutting some grooves too shallow and too narrow one time and could not get the blower to sit flat because the orings were out so far, it bound up the blower. Do it right and make some calls to shops that do that work. My adapter plate is cut for 1/4" oring and the intake is cut for 3/16. Probably modified or been repaired before I got it. Call and verify the dimensions you need with shops.

    I'm trying to do this to Dart BBC heads which are made to use a intake gasket (like normal) so I also need to make up for that thickness that is not there?

    I'm thinking of making a gasket shaped spacer out of 1/8" aluminum (the same thickness as the gasket) and Loctite silicone sealant this to the intake manifold.

    Sodak.....I have made thin spacers from aluminum and machined them to fit the intake ports exactly. I then bolted the spacers to the mafifold with like an 8-32 countersink screw and made sure the head of screw is below the spacer. Before I bolted the spacers on I put a thin coat of silicone to make sure there are no gaps between the manifold and spacer. Hope this helps

    Can you measure what o-ring groove dimensions you have?

    This o-ring is a Ø.139" cross section and I'm used to using .125". I believe most the hemi heads are using Ø.139".

    If you have a groove you can measure the width and depth, I would sure appreciate it!
