On the elderly hat nozzles with the ball check valve there is a long tapered spring that goes into the nozzle first. The question is which way around does the spring go. Does the big end go in first with the small end towards the jet or the other way around?

    Check Balls in Hat

My understanding is that the check ball/spring nozzle holder is used as a small poppet, usually around 30 psi or so and is used to help regulate idle and/or off idle/low rpm fuel flow. I have two of them in my hat for that reason.

The ball sits on the small end of the spring, as mentioned above.
