    Law of Averages Trips Taylor

ANAHEIM, CA — Having battled to the final round at Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Arizona, for the last two years in a row, Dennis Taylor knew he still had his work cut out for him. Last year’s win was a fitting capper after the previous year’s runner-up effort, but we all know that nothing stays the same in life. During Friday’s lone qualifying session, the Plumbing Concepts Top Alcohol Funny Car shook the tires in a violent attempt to find some traction. With 10 cars making the session, Taylor placed a respectable fourth in the lineup, commenting, “The track was junk. You’d think it would’ve had some bite just a few days after a national event.” His fellow competitors felt the same way, though a few ran well.

Saturday’s early session saw the temperature at 74 degrees, humidity at 16 percent, with a corrected altitude of 2,486 feet above sea level. Crew Chief, Ora Vasquez, added, “We went up there on the soft side, not wanting to beat ourselves. We knew an aggressive tune-up would back us up against the wall for the final session, so better safe than sorry.” For Vasquez, the theory paid dividends, as Taylor clicked off a 5.88-second run at just under 250mph, which was good enough for the number six spot. Team Taylor rolled its striking Camaro Funny Car to the line once again, only to shake the tires and struggle to a 6.00 at 247mph, holding onto the final qualifying spot, as five cars missed the cut.

Sunday’s first round saw Dennis paired with the number-one qualifier, Mark Woznichak. Taylor was away first at the green light, but “The Woz” virtually duplicated his qualifying effort and fought his way to the finish line, leading by nine feet. Dennis added, “That was our second narrow loss of this new season, and it proves that my guys are always ready to give their best effort. I think we’re closer to figuring out this new combination, and only testing will get us there.”
