I saw a thread awhile back asking the question if anybody rebuilds Crane Lifters. It turned into a buy cam effects lifters thread.
Is anyone rebuilding lifters or just toss them? Not happy about trashing a set with 3 burnouts on them.... Thanks.

Shouldn't the primary question be why your lifters (Crane, or otherwise) are history after three burnouts? Regards, Chase

MR Chase - I figure a couple of the lifters took the shock from the 12k RPM when the tranny let loose, and the valve train and 3 pistons disentigrated. Any helpful information to provide or just worthless opinion?
Raceface - Propellors slip just like tires do. Could you imagine how extreme the boats would be if they didn't?

i think Chase's opinions are far from worthless. he is a very smart guy that has a wealth of knowledge to say the least. Chase....how long have you worked at Crane anyway?

OK it sounds like Chase knows something about Crane products. My original post was not "GEE I'm fricken stupid and can someone ask me why I broke something". Not looking to get my question answered with a question.
Pay close attention: Is somebody rebuilding Crane lifters?

Thank you DQUES, I spoke with Ken, sounds like he's the man for Crane lifter rebuild.

Kenny showed me one of the Morrel lifters at Indy
I got the scales out it weighed only 2 grams more than a crane
has a larger axle and looked like a nice piece
He did tell me they was going to try rebuild the cranes also
i would give him a call

I have never met Chase but from everything I have heard he is the definitive information source on cams and lifters. I was amazed to read JM dumping on him. I thought he had a good question. I would think lifters that only last three runs don't need rebuilding- they need replacing. On the other hand the set I just took out of my car that had 43 runs on them need rebuilding. I think the bearings are worn out. Dave Germain

Thanks Chase, it was a good question. We have run Crane lifters for years and never had one single issue even when we went 10,400+.....Not sure what to do now. Can you let us know if you found a soft landing somewhere. Hopefully get to see you again at the SEMA show coming up.

We all appreciate your input. People like you make our board great.

Hello LM, yes, there certainly is a difference between parts failing after three burnouts, as compared to a catastrophic over rev. IF it had been a "three burnout" instance, there are a few things that could be checked to help insure it doesn't happen again: Make sure the lifter bores are perpendicular to the camshaft, check that there is no lobe taper inadvertently ground into the camshaft, and that the lifter guidebars are not exceeding their limits of travel due to a different lifter bore spacing than they are intended for. Any of these conditions will quickly shorten the life of the lifters. Other causes can be considered, but these conditions do occur from time to time. After 42+ years here at Crane (and having campaigned Hemi powered vehicles for a couple of decades), and dealing with many of the premier engine builders/tuners, I've been exposed to numerous examples of "things that go wrong", and wanted to share some of those lessons learned (if needed). Even if these turn out not to be of benefit to you, hopefully they may benefit one of the other folks on this forum. Regards, Chase
