Roller lifter body distortion

After about 20 full passes, i find the lifter body in the fork area is widened.
Means you can pull the lifter very easily with one finger until the shaft of the bearing comes close to the lower area of the lifter bore. From there on you have to pull real hard (by hand)
I tried different brands of lifters - all develop in the same manner.
I don`t have any valvefloat (to my knowledge) and the camshaft does not show any unusual signs. Valve seat pressure is 330+, rev it to 9200, boost
is 43 to 48, tit. valves.
Engine is a blown alky big chevy, dart big M block.

any ideas?

I've wore out Isky Redzone lifters in 15-20 passes because my lifter bores were getting wore and i had too much clearence. We sleeved them and that was about 35 runs ago and they are still good.
This is BBC stuff.

 

The spreading of the lifter body on the Chevy is common. This is going to sound a little shade tree but if there is no other damage/wear I press/squeeze them back into shape. Made a couple of fixtures to use in the press.

It occured to me the other day that I might be able to use a large pump plier, smooth the jaws so they fit the lifter and hand squeeze them back in.

Warning: This takes a little practice. Don't get nuts. They move easier than you think.

PS: loose valve lash seems to contribute to the spreading.

Spring Pressure

If you increase the spring pressure it will greatly improve the performance of all the valve train components. I suggest an increase of between 40 to 50%.

Determine the area of the intake valve and multiply by manifold pressure. Subtract the answer from your existing seat pressure and the difference is the effective valve spring seat pressure.

Area of a 2.400” intake valve = 4.524. 4.524 x 45 lbs of pressure = 203 pounds of negative force. 330 Pounds of seat pressure – 203 pounds of negative force = 127 pounds of real seat pressure.

I think you would be well served by increasing the valve spring pressure to 500 lbs.

But, why are the lifter body’s distorting? Are the valves floating? Is a rule of thumb 300 lbs on the seat? I had a similar problem on a BBC and now the Hemi. I have 425’ on the seat, 2.400 valve, but only making 35 lbs boost. I solved my problem by going to 1” lifters. I felt I had a geometry problem within the push rod alignment.

I too have had trouble with this happening- using 7/8' lifters, not a bbc, lunati where first on 305 seat pressure so bought crowers - this sorted it, Have since changed combination now 425lb on seat - bought crane full body -these spead, so ground off the pins and have nut & bolted the crowers to the z bar.
still to try these with 425 lb.

I also wondered if 1" were the answer.

thanks @ all for the positive input,
i`am currently using an installed heigh of 2.05 and with that it`s nearly impossible to increase the seat pressure to over 380 lbs at an intake lift
of .840 because there is simply no spring out there. (correct me if i`am wrong)

looks like i need to get some longer valves ( plus valvetrain pieces) to get
in the 450 to 500 lbs. range.

BTW; how often do you guys bend the lifter fork back (within one lifter life)
any cracking issues ?

The Fix

We have springs that range from 300 pounds @ 2.050” to a spring measuring 580 pounds @ 2.050”. These springs have a solid height of aprox. 1.135”. Leaving plenty of room for a valve lift of .840"

If you really want to fix the problem the solution is available.
