This is Jim in TN and I work on a few 980 Whipples. I have seen 3 different front snout bearing sizes. The best way is to take the bearings out and just replace with the same part number bearing and you will be fine. Most bearing supple businesses will have the bearings you need for the standard 2 piece 980 drive snout or the 1 piece RCD drive snout too.
I keep the 3 front bearings/rear bearings/seals that have to be greased with Grease also, if you need some standard rebuild parts-THANKS! Jim

    hello Jim!
    here is my bearing problem:
a little time ago i decided to change the snout bearing as i felt it was a little "rough" when turned by hand,so i removed the old bearing, did not take notice of any reference on it(first mistake)and ordered a replacement through a bearing company, based on some mesurements in millimeters, not inches(i'm in France).
they sent me an SKF bearing with a high RPM rating.
the second mistake is i trashed the old bearing before receiving the new one,in which the shaft(i do have a long shaft going staight into the blower)fits perfectly, but i noticed there is some play between the bearing outer shell diameter and the bore in the snout.
i can fit a 0.1mm feeler gage (0.0039in)in this gap.
    bore diameter is 2.835in
    shaft diameter is 1.378in
    thickness is 0.669in.
the SKF i have is sold with these specs:
    outer diameter:72mm
    inner dia:35mm
    thickness:17mm
what would you have(bearing and front seal)that matches my snout case?
or is that gap acceptable?(i don't think so)
    thank you
    cyril

I would not run it with the play in the measurements, and the 1 piece RCD drive Snouts have never caused me any problems. (MUCH LESS VIBRATIONS) The 2 piece driveshafts pick up vibrations and the bearings need to be changed every several years, but never ever much trouble either.
I do not have a 1 piece shaft here now, but when I get my hands on one, I will do my best to get you some bearing numbers-Jim

I solved my clearance problem :a local machine shop is making a new snout shell based on the bearing and seal diameters.
This one will be aluminum, not magnesium.

The RCD one piece shaft Whipple R980 & A980 drive snout uses a 6207 bearing.
