M1 Shelf Life

    I bought a drum of M1 in 2017 and shortly thereafter took my car apart. I just got it back out recently. The issue I’m having is I can’t seem to get any heat to show in my NGK plugs. I’d run the combination for several years prior to 2017 without this issue, the significant change being I dropped the displacement from 588CI to 522CI and installed zoomies versus headers. Data indicates boost is where it should be, so the supercharger is moving the expected air. EGT’s go up when I lean it out, and power goes up as well... but I’m several steps leaner than my suggested tuneup and still no heat. So... wondering if stale M1 will cause these symptoms? Cold plugs, high EGT, engine off on expected power... Thanks in advance for any experience you can share.

    What is the highest EGT temps at the end of the run? Plugs heat range being cold is not the problem because plug heat range refers to the center electrode only and with alcohol one only reads the base circle of the plug.

    Hi Mike. I’m seeing about 1200F on 5 of 8 cylinders and 1100F on the other 3 - plan to balance them up some. Thermocouples are exposed junction.

    I’ve never experienced bad fuel that I know of so can’t comment there.

    Low ignition timing will definetely cause what you are seeing.

    I struggled similarly after changing cranks one time. Verified TDC multiple times with the new crank. Finally decided that I must not have had TDC accurate on my old crank and therefore had more timing in the old motor than what I had recorded.

    I agree, it does act under-timed... but you’re right, unless the old setup was incorrectly referenced I’m in the same spot I was before. Thought I’d check here to see if anyone else has seen old fuel be an issue. Thinking water might cause a performance change long before it would noticeably run poor.
