I recently have come across a problem with my blown 540 BBC. The #2 cylinder burns oil and I can not seem to find where the problem is. The car needed new rods so I changed them, when I went to fire it up it was pouring out large amounts of smoke and oil out of the #2 cylinder. before changing the rods I never had this problem. I pulled the passenger side head off looking for a problem, the head gasket between the block and gasket was oily but between the head and the gasket was dry. I called New Century about the problem and they said they had a similar problem with another customer and they said that the problem was with a sleeve leaking oil between the block and the sleeve. I put it back together with cooper coat and silicon and the problem still exists. All of the rings are new and in the right direction, I have copper coated the head gaskets and put silicone in between the cylinders where it could possibly leak at the sleeve; the piston is not damaged. The intake runner is dry and so is the intake manifold. I had the heads checked out and they are perfect, no problems with the valve guides or seals. I have asked multiple people if they have heard of this problem and have said no and have no idea on what the problem could be. Looking for some ideas to what could be the problem or if anyone has had an issue like this before.

This is a long shot but what was the side clearance on the 1 and 2 rod. If the clearance is too much it tends to throw lots of oil at the pistons. This may be causing excess oil in your combustion chamber.

    Again long shot.

Does the smoke lessen with an increase in RPM? If so, I'd relook at the rings

    New Century,
Have you checked the sleeve for roundness while in the block?

I know that you said that the rings are in correctly but that condition is exactly what will happen if you have the second ring up side down. It will pump oil like you cannot believe. Jeff J

The smoke increases with rpm especially when you blip the throttle, it shoots out a huge white cloud.

The gasket seals perfectly, no oil in the intake manifold or the runner in the head.

That sure sounds like the second ring is in upside down, or is it totally worn out. Made that mistake myself.

I vote for a ring installed incorrectly. Had it happen just this season. Tried everything else before pulling the piston to find the second ring upside down. It just happens sometimes. JW

I vote for a intake leak or a cracked intake port sucking oil out of the valley -- I have seen 2 nd rings upside down in fuel motors -- makes no smoke at all- have you leak down checked this engine ?
If it's sucking oil as you say it should leak badly on the a leak down check ----

    leak

it wont leak down bad if its the intake gaskets. because the valves are closed when you do a leak down. but if its the rings it might show up on a leak down. there is only 3 ways for oil to gets in the cylinder. by valve guides...rings...or intake ports and one more way a hole in the piston. wish will show up real fast in a leak down...that's all I can think of please let us all know what you find...

Have a friend with a new century and smokes out of #1 cyl. on start.
It clears up after 30 seconds or so. I figured it was out of the blower seal.

I run a CN billet BBC. Assembled the motor, test ran and found failed valves tips (not harden). Pulled the heads off, changed valves, re-assembled the top end, started motor and it burned oil out of #2 hole. After (I can't remember how many times we pulled it apart looking for what was wrong) turned out to be sucking oil from between the block and head into the intake port pass the o-ring and sealer. Had all angels double checked and everything was perfect still burning oil. Added a thin intake gasket, stopped burning oil. I guess the first time we assembled the motor we must have got the intake on just right because there was no oil burn. Must have tried 5 or 6 more times and always started drawing oil from the intake runner.
