Currently running two batteries in the jalopy. Power Grid and all of car's electronics supplied with 12 volts. I have a second battery in the start circuit to get RPM up for mag. Works well, but I have heavy batteries and will be changing over winter. Will the Grid run on 16 volts? With a good battery, will 16 volt do the trick for starting? Crank trigger, 4.5 4.310 10.4 to one compression C rotor... or get two light 12 volts and stick with what I have are far as wiring?

    TIA

A Grid runs just great on 16 volts. Can go higher ok like 19 volts according to MSD. For info they will also function down to around 9.8 or 10 volts

Get to two lightweight 12 volt batteries and a CSR smart start 24 volt solenoid so you can hit the starter with 24 volts. That way you can use regular batteries and 12 volt charger. Or just build a 24 volt battery pack with quick plug to the starter. Then all you need is a small motorcycle battery on the car for your electronics. I did the battery pack deal with quick plug to the onboard starter with a small gel quad battery on the car and couldn't be happier

    Onboard start

I would love to pull the batteries out, but there are days I have to "One man crew the car"...... what a workout.. My support crew usually consists of my wife, she does a great job, pulls valve covers, sets tire pressure, but dealing with any starting issues would go over her head.

Need to decide on 16 or 24 volts... I have a two big batteries now 12 for everything and 24 for start. Single 16 or two 12? My only concern with 16 is cranking RPM and the 44 mag. Thoughts?

Had 16 volts on my car once..... Freshened the blower .... New strips made it tight enough that it would not spin fast enough to start. Do what you have to do to run 24 volts. I have a used smart start switch I can sell you. I kept it for a spare but I'll never need it.

    battery

he has a screw . in my experience a 16v turbostart will be fine .

we forget to charge and sometimes run 3 to 4 runs before charging

and I had the same problem on my roots fresh from psi , I burned up a starter with an new blower

    Battery pack

Unless your rules prohibit external battery boosters, removing the batteries would be the way to go. Then you can run your electronics on a smaller lighter battery.

Put the external battery pack on your golf cart or tow vehicle and it's as simple as plugging a cable in to supply starter voltage.

Cheap way to get rid of a bunch of weight.

If your car dies after the burnout you probably got other issues you need to fix anyway. We can't restart in NHRA and I can't remember the last time I saw a car 'just die' idling....so don't read too much into the 'what if I need to restart it' excuse.

    Those are 15.4 lbs X 2 for 30.5 lbs, the lithium s are 4 lbs X 2 for 8 lbs, 22.5 lbs lighter for $750 more.......for some of these cars including mine that"s a cheap 22.5 lbs now-a-days.

That is the only lithium battery i would ever concider running.

I have seen too many catch fire. But the lithium pros i have never seen catch fire. i have seen one fail, It stopped working and balloned but it didn't catch fire like so many other lithium batteries.

Will, what battery do you recommend? I am using a 12v alarm type battery but I'm sure there are better options these days... Edit: I saw your post on the Leaders drill battery mount, I am on it! Thanks!

Currently use PRP racing products batteries, we use their 24 volt starter pack and their feather lite 16 volt for fuel timers, racepak and grid. The feather lite battery only weights 14 OZ. This package is used on a blower pro mod with no issues.

i use a milwaukee battery and mount from neil and parks
and plug in 3 16 volt = 52 volts charged batteries on my golf cart
    spins probably too fast
    using rcd front starter

    oil pressure builds fast also

make sure you spin the spindle in on the starter

doing this for 3 years and works great except the 16 volt turbo start batteries are junk . the posts spin in the battery and lose connection internally

Thanks Bossman.. We also build 2 small 12v batteries weighing 2.4lbs each that we use on a Pro extreme motor with a crank starter, starts it easily and we run all the electronics off one of the 12v.
