Hanna hoping to rebound at Gatornationals

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - After kicking off the 2006 season two weeks ago with a problem-plagued outing at the Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at No Problem Raceway just outside of New Orleans, NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car rookie Will Hanna and the Advanced Transmission Center/Clack Motorsports team hope to rebound at this weekend's AC Delco Gatornationals at the historic Gainesville Raceway.

Hanna, 26, of Richwood, Texas, cites the team has analyzed the data from the past weekend, and looks forward to a fresh start this weekend in the team's new 2006 Monte Carlo.

"We had freak parts problems on all three of our qualifiers at No Problem," said Hanna. "One run we killed a plug wire, then we sheared the degree wheel from the crank hub, which threw the engine timing off and really hurt some parts. When we went into the first round on Sunday, we just shot in the dark on the tuneup, and had even more problems along with a lot of tireshake. For a track called 'No Problem,' we sure had a bunch."

"But one of the things I learned while racing with Shelly Howard was you just have to put those kinds of races behind you and concentrate on the next race, specifically the first run at that race," Hanna continued. "Shelly was kind of like a mom to me at the track, and that was one of the many lessons I learned from her. So that's the gameplan for Gainesville - just try to get a good run in out of the box, and build from there."

Team Owner and Crew Chief Harry Clack shares those sentiments.

"We just want to continue forward progress," stated Clack. "As we get more laps down the track we can continue to develop the tune-up as Will continues to develop as a driver. Along with the tune-up, we are continuing to develop some new parts. We're real happy with the new Frank Weiss Racing Components Two-Stage Dry Sump Oil Pump we're helping to R&D. We're also pleased with the potential the Lencodrive/Coan Torque Converter combination is showing as a viable drivetrain in the class. I think the team itself has a lot of potential, and running at a great track like Gainesville Raceway will help us move in the right direction."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two sessions. Qualifying concludes Saturday morning, followed by round one of eliminations that evening. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
