Whiteley looking to extend win streak on “The Mountain”

Div 7 2012_lvms 016.JPG MORRISON, Colo. – June 17, 2007. That was the last time that defending four-time NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Jim Whiteley lost a round at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver. Whiteley and his YNot Racing team come into their home track with one of their best seasons to date and hope to extend their current four year win streak during this weekend’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series “Thunder on the Mountain” Central Regional at Bandimere Speedway.

Whiteley, a Colorado native from Grand Junction, credits Crew Chief Norm Grimes expertise racing on “The Mountain” in Denver.

“Norm has a pretty good handle on Denver,” said Whiteley. “He really has a pretty good handle on the car period right now. We feel pretty good about keeping that going this weekend.

“This facility is just phenomenal,” Whiteley continued. “It is one of the best tracks we race on all year. Larry [Crisp – track manager] and the crew at Bandimere really do a great job on track prep and running a good race. I wish there were 16 races here each year.”

The high altitude conditions of Bandimere Speedway require many changes for tuners to make to the gear ratios, compression and fuel system among other things. Whiteley cites there are some changes that have to be made in the cockpit as well.

“The big changes are to the setup of the car,” explained Whiteley. “For the most part, my routine in the car is the same; you just have to be patient with the gear changes. The first gear change is at about the same time as normal. You really have to wait on high gear, though. You don’t stay in high gear very long because the car is running in second gear for so long. Other than that it’s not that different.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with one session, followed by two sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
