I run Billet rods in a 7 second blown Alcohol dragster....how many passes on a set of rods before we replace them?

Ive heard some say 20, some say 35, some say as long as they arnt stretched, leave them in...

Have no bearing issues or detonation. Soft tune. have done 33 passes on this set. 25 of which are sub 7.50s

    Regards
    Dave

We run an 8-71 BAE motor and change them after 35 passes. Typical rule it seems in a non screw supercharged motor is 40 or less.

If you're in doubt, change them...it saves a lot of worrying.

    rods

The best time to change is 1 or 2 rounds before thay break. HA HA
We feel we are running the best billet rod on the market {Fowler Engine in Columbus Ohio makes them in house} in our promod. We turn about 9000rpm and have good luck at changing then at 30 passes. We will put v bearings in at 15 runs and trash the rods at 30.

Thanks guys, it sounds like I shouldnt risk any more runs. Amongst these 33 passes so far, I have broken a few rockers, lifters and dropped one valve....so i will take your advise and change em!

Next question...what rod to use? So many to choose from...

By the way, my combo is Arias Hemi Chevy. Rods have standard BBC crank journal and 1.040" pin

    Cheers

If you want some piece of mind, use the MGP ProMod rod. They also use the A-1 rod bolts which are better than the ARP's.

Not too rain on anyones parade but I broke a Brooks 88 rod on my first pass, the bolt backed out of the hole and it was all over red rover.

So I thought, lets not have this problem again and I called Gerry from brooks and asked him some very fundamental questions, among one of the questions was obviously, how many runs should I expect from a set of Brooks 88.

Gerry said 13 runs and then throw them in the bin, I run a blown/alky KB dragster in an 6.50 et limited class and only spin it too a max of 9000.

A friend of mine was running them too and I told him about 13 runs, he dismissed it as you have too be kidding right, on the 15th run guess what happened.

Checkout my avatar and you'll see my lovely new Brooks 88 in the pan.

    Cheers Ray.

I was told that Jeff Wilison runs the MGP rods in his TAFC and got I belive somthing like 40+ runs on them and still looked good when they checked them. Might be worth looking into.

The problem is you cannot go by how they look. I ran a set of Brooks 88 on a door car once for 41 laps, on #42 a rod broke and all the rest looked just fine. These rods take abuse internally and will not show signs of stress visible to the eye.
