I realize that a variety of different things could possibly lead to a bad day for the burst panels, but what are some of the more common things (mistakes) to watch out for with blown meth? I've got a friend who's having some burst panel blues this year and neither of us can put our finger on the culprit(s). Thanks.

LEAN!! Or not large enough vent tube can do it as well. They don't usually bang for no reason

Unless your setup lets them flex and you run it for a long time. Try to ensure there is a stop so they don't flex and work harden and blow early.

Make sure (if there is one) that the screw at the center isn't out too far. Also, put a drop of silicone on that screw to limit vibration and premature failure. Using a good burst panel is also important, we have ran them all and I have to say PSI makes the best one. I believe theirs are $29/ea., not horrible. That aside, if he's having a re-occuring issue it's likely due to detonation/lean fuel system. I'd still check out the above things but maybe he needs to back the timing down and give it some fuel. There are other issues that COULD be possible...pump cavitating, hard line sucking air, bad port lines...the list goes on and on. Good luck in finding the issue and if I can be of any help just ask.

A few years ago, a friend of mine was having burst panel blues too. After checking and rechecking, he found a small, very difficult to find, crack in one intake seat. The crack was practically invisible. Once heat started to expand things, the crack opened up and lit the air fuel mixture in the intake plenum.

Are you having a fuel pressure drop during the run? A too small or clogged vent could cause this, as well as sucking the hose closed or even not enough movement on your suction side will cause the hose to suck air at the joints. If your tank is improperly baffled or if one has broken loose could cause it as well. If you don't have any of these issues and your tune up is good (they always are) then I would be looking for a sealing issue on the intake side like mentioned above.
