What breaks the second ring ?

    We are having some fuel issues and i can kinda figure all of them out but something that has me stumped is that in the last couple of races i get a bad leakdown only to find the second ring broke any ideas thanks alton

    broke rings

    Did you gap the rings for each cyl? Are the ring lands still in good shape? Just a few ideas. Don

    rings and pistons good ring gap the same as last year

    broken ring

    Did it pinch the ring land ----Generally this happens when its to lean at the hit.

    piston and ring look good just broken we are having a lean condition but i dont see detonation in the bearings

    so we had this thing flying and richened it up and now even thought it seems to be lean it keeps lifting ring lands and burning pistons ? and now we have this issue with the broken rings ?

    Are you measuring the pistons to verify the skirts have not collapsed?

    when the problem started it had all new pistons in it i have had to put some of the old ones back in but they are not shrunk someone has said that too rich will cause this but i see no signs of over rich in the plugs and the oil isnt milky

    Have you checked your hi speed --pump loop do they have jets in them?Engine is definately lean what kind of blower?

    fuel system has been checked,checked,rechecked,and mostly replaced pump,valve,popets,lines we have done all the normal stuff as far as vents the car ran great last year sent blower and had freshened which made it move more air but we richened it to compensate but the car idles really rich and seems to go lean down track it has two high speeds and we have the second turned around is it possible that with the blower being better it is pulling fuel through the hat and starving the ports ? like i said the tune up is the same as last year just overall richer on main and loop

    526 brad 8 with a r980 whipple this thing flew first race out then we freshened it and fattened it a little to race tulsa and it ran hard first pass then it went to hurting pistons and we cant find the problem i dont see anything a flow bench would tell because all the stuff is the same as when it was flowed and we ran it last year

    Does it have dribblers and ports if so what is the pressure set at in the checks?

    hurting it by richening it

    I'm not saying this is your problem, but I have seen in some cases where someone is so lean they don't have enough fuel to hurt it, so they richen it up, then it has enough to burn it up. "Back side of lean" is what I've always called it.

    What brand of ring are you running? How much gap/bore? Any difference in head temp?

    Maybe the blower is putting out warmer air than before?

    no dribblers system was flowed and set by Rage last year it has a 8 psi check on the ports which i have checked as well as replaced

    the same rings,gap,bore we have always ran we have no air temp or head temp if it were rich enough to hurt the motor with too much fuel wouldnt it be milking the oil ?

    looking at it from my standpoint is that i need to figure why the car now idles so rich you cant stand anywhere around it even with two different barrel valves both flowed and set then when it goes down it burns up ?

    dont laugh but is the tank vent clear???? if not you can make it as rich as you want then burn it up on a pass cause it runs outta fuel. and if any of your nozzles are on cks better ck um cause at idle they are closed when you step if they dont open or got a piece of rubber in them it will do it every time

    I'm not saying you are hurting it from being rich...you just about have to hydraulic it to do that. I'm just saying I have seen a car be so lean...run fine and not hurt parts...because it doesn't have enough fuel to hurt itself. It's that lean. So as you richen it up, it is finally getting enough fuel to burn itself up. Just explaining that. Other than that you won't hurt a motor by richening it.

    Another one off way to hurt stuff I have heard of is getting oil down in the cylinders leaking through the plug holes. A BAE 8 should have orings to seal the plug tube off...check that.

    If you had a big change in head temp, could be a factor. More engine temp would cause a ring gap that previously worked to close up. Also you mentioned new pistons - are they the same part number? When you put the old pistons in, did it run fine?

    I have seen this several times before as well, I refer to it as 'the other side of lean' or running 'on the lean side', not to be confused with 'running lean.' I am assuming that this is a promod. Is it possible that a baffle has come loose in the tank and is plugging the outlet under hard acceleration? What about the hose on the suction line of the pump to the tank? Is it new? have you changed it over to a different style hose? This is an item that is often overlooked, even on the flow bench. I had an issue of not having enough 'play' on my suction hose and when the car would leave real hard on good tracks, it would blow the panels out of it from the pump sucking air at one of the joints on the inlet. A change of hose to something more flexible cured my problem. Does your fuel pressure or flow meter drop suddenly? Do you tape the fuel shutoff or have an over spring assembly? Have you checked the fuel shutoff to see if it is leaking past the spool?

    tank and vents checked and double checked,new inlet made of steel with short rubber connections,new line from pump to valve,valve to ports,taped shut off,two different shut offs thought it might be hurting it in the burn out but it is fine all the plugs look good then we made a 250 ft hit and the #1 plug looked lean but not bad all others looked good then we ran it about 450ft and it hurt the piston i am going to put the original tune in the ports which wont be much changing and i am going to take 16 jet sizes out the hat and put them in the ports with two each larger in each cylinder does this sound safe ?
