have my fuel barrel sitting on front porch[boxed in]and got some major rain and leaked real bad on to top of barrel;;bad thing maybe is I had left my barrel pump in barrel and there was a puddle of water all around where pump screwed into barrel;;was holding water around it but don't know if any leaked into barrel;;;when I pump it out of barrel into my fuel jugs are there anyway to tell if water got into it and if so then can I run it or if not then is there a way to remove water from the alcohol?going need it for next weekend

You have to measure the specific gravity with a hydrometer.

    Water in methanol . . .

Don, you can float it with a hydrometer and see what it shows.

Not sure if you can put some castor oil in a jar and shake it (think the go kart folks do something like this).

Main thing is assume that water can get in when you think it can't.

Seal it up good after you pump it into your fuel jugs, the pump will not seal it.

You can have it collect enough water to fail a fuel check just by driving through a thunderstorm . . . .

Also, put a board under one side of the barrel so anything that collects on top will be away from the bungs.

    Take care, K

Mike..going be testing at a outlaw track so be no fuel check but don't want to hurt eng..eith water in my fuel.what be safe on specific gravity? how do i checj it..do i need to pump fuel into my fuel jug th r n check it?do i need to let it set for any time before i check?guess what I'm need to know is how do i check with the hydrometer..

The specific gravity of methanol varies a little depending on temperature. If you look at this data you will see the specific gravity http://www.methanol.org/Technical-I...ion/Physical-Properties-of-Pure-Methanol.aspx
Don't know how much water you can have in it before it damages anything and not sure it will. NHRA is concerned with it adding performance. Nitrous guys actually spray water in their engines to control detonation so it must take a lot to be bad.

Water being heavier than methanol, wouldn't pumping out the methanol from a couple inches from the bottom of the barrel alleviate the problem of getting water in the fuel jug??

I believe that water disperses in methanol. They use methanol to get rid of water in fuel tanks
