We run a KB, BAE fuel head motor on alchohol and put some new valve springs on this year. We have the same push rods, same Stage 5 intake rockers and same valves, retainers and lash caps and everything and the valve springs measure the same diameter but now when the intake valves are closed it seems that the edge of the spring just does touch the inside radius of the intake rocker. Just wondering if anyone else had ever run into this problem. Thanks Jeff

Did you check install height with a good gauge. Sounds like your retainers might be stretched out at the bottom of the lock. Mic it to a new one. Something like that doesn't change for no reason.

On a lot of valve springs one end of the outer spring is beveled for this purpose. Do you have that beveled outer radius on one end and is that beveled edge installed to the top?

I am with JayCuda on this....check installed height with a new retainer compared to your used retainers....if the old retainers measure .005" taller installed height - pitch em....you might also try Comp Cams offset retainers....they offer several heights of the 1.625" spring retainers to change installed height...

Thanks guys for the response. I talked to Noel Manton today and he also gave me some food for thought. I believe what we have is that several of the intakes are getting a little thin and when we had the heads done our buddy Mark Bowman told me that we would need to get some intake valves as several were getting thin but he thought we could get by this year. I believe that the valve is far enough up in the seat that it is letting the installed height be to far up in the head. I don't pretend to be that smart about this stuff but I am trying to learn. Mr. Manton offered to taper the top of the spring for me and I may do that but I am leaning toward just putting new intake valves in it and retainers as well as I have no idea how many passes these have on them. That being said I believe they are Victory valves, does anybody have any thoughts on brand. Thanks very much for your thoughts on this problem. Jeff

There are locks made with different heights that sometimes help in these situations.

Thanks again everybody. I am going to pull the springs off this weekend and see if indeed there is a taper on them. I talked to Mark Bowman and he told me these were Comp Cams springs so I will check them out this weekend. Thanks Jeff
