valve spring tips breaking off

    i run erson 050 springs on the exhaust and the tips are starting to break off
    ive ran these springs for a few years and never had this before
    the pieces are anywere from .25 to .750 that are breaking off
    the pressures are still 450 @2.100

    why is it just starting to do this and will it hurt to run them with the tips breaking off
    brad 5 .755lift at ex valve in at 2.100 10,000 rpm c screw 115od brad rockers

    i used to run a chevrolet,big chief stuff, that would break the tips off.found out it was common.i did'nt like the extra parts floating around in the motor or top end but never hurt anything.

    take a dotco and polish the ends you will be fine..Dave

    I have had the same problem , I grind the tips of the springs to break the sharp edges now and so far so good!!! I have also run them with the ends off with no problems , I always worried were the pieces might end up !!!!! Luckily I have always found the pieces in the pan ...

    Are you running ti. valves? If you are did you clean them with brake/klene. If you did thats a no no for some reason it gets into micro scrach's and makes the scrach a crack, and then they break.

    Eli you can clean good quality ti valves with brake clean. You couldnt clean ti springs. Been cleaning our valves for over decade and put over a hundred runs on them.

    According to some experts on valve springs the reason the tips break off is due to harmonics oscillation of the springs. This can be caused by several things in the valve train. Too steep of a ramp that the lifter cannot follow so it jumps and comes down hard which is felt back in the spring or too much pushrod flex or the valve setup wrong. It can be hard to pinpoint. Sometimes it is easier just to grind the tip off to start with so you don't have the problem.

    Do you see anything wrong with just grinding the tips off of them out of the box?

    I highly recommend grinding off the tips right out of the box

    Approximately how much of the tip do you recommend taking off mike
    I have had mine break at various lengths?

    Right around 1/8" to 3/16".

    Yes I run ti valves ,no on the brake klene I had a few people tell me to dress all the tips on the springs including some of the manufactures at the indy show I figured it couldn't hurt ????? So far so good ????do you think its a bad idea????? Thanks joe o
