Here's an idea I've had for a few years some sort of crew challenge that would go on in Indy, since it's so drawn out and you have the one run on a couple of days.

Basically it would have to be organized to some degree. It would also have to be policed.

The rough idea would be to take a one run day, say thursday. If you're entered in the challenge, you don't get to start servicing your car until a set time. You would have to do one class at a time. If TAD's went first, TAFC teams would serve as officials to monitor the TAD teams and vice versa. TAD would start say, 4:00. Teams would have to complete basic alcohol servicing...check the rods and service clutch. Monitors would verify the clutch was within say .003 of zero and would be shown 8 bearings out of the motor.

Winner would be the first team to fire.

What do you think? Ideas? Or one of my hairbrain schemes?

    Will,
Cool idea but wouldn't the convertor cars have an "unfair" advantage? Maybe if all cars are pitted close enough to hear one of those handheld airhorns one could be used to signal the start of the competition. It would also be cool if a sponsor backs the competition the winnings go specifically to the crewmembers only.

    damn converter cars

yeah, haven't figured out how we would fit into the equation...maybe just compete in the bottom end 'segment time'

also a/f and bad servicing isn't exactly apples and apples.

contest at indy or not, i'll still go on the clock against any bottom end guy in the country. i can still sling a torque wrench...:D

I will take you on.First two rounds of any event, you are the only person to service your car and I will be the only person to service mine. That means only you can touch the car for the complete turn around.I will be the only one to touch my car.Make it light on yourself!

And in this corner we have Will "Torque Wrench" Hanna & in the other corner we have "blownracer/a-fuel"
All right men here are the rules: verbal jabs below the belt are encouraged, no oil slinging or squirting oil in your opponents eyes, no hidden parts in your gloves.
Come out, shake torque wrenches and let the fun begin. :D :D

For the converter cars they have to remove the Lenco, can & converter just like the clutch guys have to remove there stuff. Maybe the converter guys have an (X) amount minute penalty because they don't have to grind floater's & disks or replace the clutch pack & set ring height.

How would you penalize Mike Kosky? he don't service his clutch every run? Plus the money if any should go to a charity, alky guys do it for the fun, not the money, you don't want to spoil them now do you? LOL LOL:D :D :D

    challenge

that's a dangerous precendent to set for my crew guys, me doing all the work...don't want them getting any crazy ideas...lol..:D

seriously, i'll go on the clock from the time the car is on the jacks, run 8 rods, and have the pan back on...i think i can hang with anyone in the country..:D my personal best was 22 min.

one day when we catch a slow one-run day that won't throw our routine out of whack, i'll take you up on the single man service challenge.

it should be easy enough for you shane, after all, them a/fuelers you just refuel them and plug the six shooter charger in right?

Will; the Swedes have run the "Kamasa Tools Challenge" for about 4 or 5 years now, in an event not even near a racetrack. It is an event by itself. They (I believe) do a four car competition, all timed by a clock. They start the thing, run for a bit, clock starts, and I think 1 rod and piston from each side comes out, for all to see, then gets reassembled and started again.
Clock is marked as each one starts.
The first Swede with a MBR motor will really kick some ass.
Knowing many Swedes and having been to Mantorp Park twice, my guess is the fun really starts later!!

    thompson's are in

I'll put my 3 guys up against anyone. Nobody can do the clutch faster than tyler! bob, i like the part about pulling out a piston/rod assembly we'll even spot someone an extra man if that is part of the deal, and we'll still beat you!

all "cocky" kidding aside, sounds like a fun deal.

    grinding

whether or not you grind discs in between round plays a large role in how quick you can service it. then if you do grind discs, it depends on what kind of machine you have on how quick you can turn it around.
