Top Alcohol Clean Sweep for Phillips

Twelve-time Top Alcohol Australian title holder Gary Phillips, has clawed his way back to second spot on the points table. After a clean sweep of the Nitro Champs at Western Sydney, he finds himself between Steve and Debbie Reed in the points tally.

After accruing the five bonus points from setting low elapsed time of the event with a career best 5.545 second run, Phillips went on to win the event by defeating current series leader Steve Reed in the final. Phillips’ 5.634 second charge at 255.15 mph in the final round netted him another five points for the event’s top speed, taking the Lucas Oil Products Chevy Monte Carlo within five points of the lead.

‘We had to win this event or it would have been all over for the chance to win the championship It’s nice to have these weekends once in a while when everything goes your way,’ said an elated Phillips. ‘Now it will come down to the Winternationals, which is like a storybook ending really from a drag racing and spectators point of view with any one of the top three able to take the title at the final event.’

Capping off the well oiled weekend, the Lucas Oil team sported not one, but two cars at the event. The ‘53 Studebaker in Top Doorslammer posted a landmark five second pass for the first time, catapulting Phillips into the coveted Five Second ‘Slammer Club at long last.

But with the final round of both categories in less than a month at the season closing Winternationals at Willowbank, the Brisbane based workshop for the Lucas Oil team will be a hive of activity as the Phillips family throw everything at claiming their thirteenth Top Alcohol title.

‘You never get tired of winning titles, that’s what drives us,’ said Phillips. ‘This sport keeps getting harder and harder, and winning is all the more satisfying. The Reeds are about as tough a competition as you’ll find anywhere, and we’re determined to get on top of the ‘Reed sandwich’ at the Winternationals that’s for sure.’
