Carter gains a round in Toronto

CAYUGA, Ont. - Locked in a heated three-way battle for the IHRA Alcohol Funny Car Championship, Thomas Carter gained valuable points on Mark Thomas and Rob Atchison when they both lost in the first round and he reached the semifinals of this past weekend's IHRA Canadian Nationals at Toronto Motorsports Park. Carter now trails Atchison by 69 points and Thomas by 31.

Carter, a practicing Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Victoria, Texas, qualified his Jeff Fowler tuned Camaro fourth in the field with a 5.925 second pass at 238.68 mph. In round one, he was to square off with Vincent Rastelli. The pair had completed their burnouts and were about to stage when the rain began to fall. Eliminations were postponed to Monday.

Rastelli was unable to return, giving Thomas the single into the semifinals. Carter pulled the trigger too soon, drawing the foul start against Larry Dobbs, giving him the automatic win.

"I really hated redlighting," said Carter. "But it just seemed like it was time to go. I don't know if I saw a light flicker or what. You just get so keyed up when you're trying to cut a light, it doesn't take much. We picked up 20 points on Atchison and Thomas, so it wasn't all bad. We're disappointed we didn't get the win and gain more ground, but we still have two races to go to."

"We still have an outside shot at the championship," Carter continued. "But we have a very real shot at finishing second. The car is there to do it. It's running great, I just have to get some consistency back in my driving. Bottom line is we really need to make up some ground in Budds Creek next weekend."

There will be little rest for the Jawbreaker Motorsports team as they head to Budds Creek, Md., for next weekend's Torco Race Fuels President's Cup Nationals.
