Carter looking to 'stay alive' in Budds Creek

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - IHRA Alcohol Funny Car driver Thomas Carter will be in the midst of drag racing's version of a fourth down conversion attempt late in the game during this weekend's Torco Race Fuels President's Cup Nationals at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, Md. Carter and his "Jawbreaker" Motorsports team still have a shot at the national championship, but with two races remaining the team needs a win this weekend to stay alive.

Carter, a practicing Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Victoria, Texas, trails current points leader Rob Atchison by 71 points and second place Mark Thomas by 34 points. He not only needs to win out the final two races, but needs Atchison and Thomas to go out early as well. Both lost in round one last weekend. Thomas has three wins this season.

"All we can do right now is win rounds," said Carter. "We can't control anything else besides what we do. Right now we really have to focus on doing our job. Jeff [Fowler] and the guys have the car running great right now, I just have to get into the same groove I was in when we won races earlier in the year."

The odds may be stacked against his team, but they aren't letting up just yet.

"We're not giving up by any means," stated Carter. "All we can do is try to win and let the cards fall where they may. I've said all along this deal was going to go down to the last race. We have a real good shot at finishing second, and we're guaranteed at least third. In the company of the people we race against, that's nothing to hang your head about."

Qualifying begins on Friday and concludes during the Saturday evening "Night of Fire." Final eliminations conclude the event on Sunday.
