Aussie Steve Harker hits home run with win in Texas

ENNIS, Texas. – Australian Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot, Steve Harker earned the team’s first win of the season at this past weekends Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event held at the Texas Motorplex. Harker used consistency to reach the finals where he defeated Texas native, Jimmy Jones.

Harker, originally from Brisbane, Aust., who calls Gainesville, Ga., home qualified his 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo with a 5.579 seconds 256.65 mph pass to take the number one position ahead of Kebin Kinsley’s 5.626, 255.97 mph qualifying time.

First round of eliminations saw Harker drive around Casey Beal to take the win with a 5.727, 243.41 mph run setting up a semi-final bye run. Harker chose to lay down another impressive time of 5.694 seconds at 255.68 mph but was not quick enough to give him lane choice over Jimmy Jones in their final round match-up.

In his semi final run, Harker ran into trouble in the shut down area of the race track as one of his parachutes got caught up under the left rear tire of the race car causing a puncture in the tire and taking out the braking system but Harker managed to stop the race car before the sand trap. The team thrashed to repair the damage in time for their final round appearance.

“There was some minor damage to the funny car body and the brake system, we also had to replace both rear tires,” said Steve “My team with the help from a few fellow division four racers did a great job to get the race car serviced in time and back to the starting line for our final round match-up with Jimmy.”

This was the third final round appearance of the season for Steve and his team and they were looking to take home the Wally. Luck was in there favor as Jones was a tenth too anxious on the starting line (-0.100 to 0.086), fouling out handing Harker an automatic win. Jones ran another solid 5.639, 256.94 mph pass, Harker slowed to 9.606, 88.28 mph as he had trouble getting the tires to hook-up and was off the throttle by the 400ft mark which did not matter as the win was decided at the starting line.

Harker currently leads the Division Four point’s chase and has increased his lead over Kebin Kinsley and Jimmy Jones after his win at this past weekend’s event.

The next event for the Harker Motorsports team will be the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway across April 26-29.
