I Have A 548 Ci. Chevy 8-71 High Helix At 28 Over . 11.7 To One Runs High 4.20s Low 4.30s On A Fat,fat, Mild Tune Up, Timing At 29 Degrees. I'm Wanting To Pick Up About A Tenth, without Hurting The Motor. I Already Have 33 Passes On It W/out Anything Going Wrong. Bearings Look Like Brand New!!! Do You Think I Can Go Down Another Tooth On The Blower, Throw 10 More At The Fuel And Still Be Safe??? The Motor Made 26 Lbs. Of Boost On A Good Run, Averages Around 24-23 ?? The Plugs Aren't Even Loseing Any Cadium Off Of Them Ngk 9. Alittle Dark From The Tip Back So The Timing Seems To Right Thanx Dean " How Much Boost Is Too Much For Steel Rods"

    Hi Dean,

I'm surprised that your bearings have survived with steel rods!
Steel rods in a blown application tend to be hard on the crank and block.
I would seriously consider installing aluminum rods if you intend to pump up the tune-up.

I have been running steel rods also. Bearings did not beat out. I think as long as you stay "safe" on the tuneup and do not detonate it should live......of course I've been wrong before.

We Ran Them For A Long Time W An 8/71 At 40 Over, then Went To A 14-71 Helix And Didnt Make Two Passes..overstressed I Suppose, Never Hurt A Bearing Though, just A Good Bowtie Block!

I guess I will stir the pot here, how come most/alot of the turbo guys run steel rods (in exc. Ecotech racers) the motors dyno between 1200-1400 hp with only 2.3 liters or so.....Just courious what some of you think about how they get away with it. The ecotech motor uses a small block chevy rod and runs 30-40 lbs of boost. I am not trying to be a Ass just trying to learn.

Not Sure, But I Did Run A Twin Turbo Small Block, On Gasoline, 26 Lbs Of Boost, And A 300 Shot Of Nitrous In A Drag Boat, steel Rods, Never Hurt A Part.

    steel rods

Whether steel rods live or die may be due to cylinder pressure which would take into account compression ratio, cam timing, type of cylinder head, intake temperature, fuel used, and last but not least ignition lead.....now the million $$$$ question, do aluminium rods allow more cylinder pressure to be used or are they used becouse we think they allow more cylinder pressure and we really have more than can be used?

Just my 2 cents, 30# of turbo boost is much smoother that 30#'s of blower boost from what Ive been told.

    boost

WHY? The cylinder doesn't know the source of the boost, or am I missing something.....?
