    Hi Guys
Just wondering what are teams using these days for stage lights and shift lights, we run an oddys powered altered here in Australia and at the moment we use a MSD RPM activated window switch with a tach convertor and a small pro lite for a launch / stage rpm light and a MSD shift light that uses the rpm chips getting its signal from the tach output on the retard box, just wondering what other racers use, the set up we have works fine it just seems a bit complicated to get the results, we run a Promag 12 and single channel retard box.
    Cheers

    Anyone????

Do most teams use tachos with shift lights already on them?

    Cheers

Not many drivers use a tach for staging or shifting. You can't take your eyes off the lights to look at a tach. As for shifting there is no way to watch a tach. Most racers have removed the tachs from the car. You can stage a blown motor either by sound or you can use the staging function of the shift light on the MSD 8973. For shifting the same applies you can do it by sound and feel or by a shift light.

If you are running heads-up it doesn't matter too much to get the rpm's on the launch and shift exactly the same every run, it would be better to have the rpms the same if your running a bracket, or index where consistency is more important, a consistent rpm may also help if you have a torque converter instead of a clutch as far as avoiding "cooking" the converter.

to me shifting @ the same time is critical, because of fuel timers and were the car is on the track..match race or not as for a tach whats that:D...........Dave

I ran a two step that was activated from the tach convertor. I had a chip in it for the stage rpm and the shift rpm. I used a pressure switch off the brakes to switch it from one setting to the other. It was simple, worked great and I got the schematic from Dave Leahy at Electrimotion. Tachs dont seem to hold up on a alcohol funny car with tire shake killing them like roaches in my hotel room here at the PRI show. Dave Germain

In our TAFC with MSD 44 we run a special order tach from Autometer that they make for the Nascar guys I'm told. It's the smallest tach they make that'll go to 11,000 (3-3/4"), wasn't even all that expensive. Part number is (or at least was 2 years ago) 6604-05703.

I run the large LED autometer shift light, both work off of one Autometer 9118 tach converter.

I disagree with not having a tach in the car.

I like to have the tach in the car for reference. I use it when I first pre-stage and bring up the rpm and then go by ear when staging. That's the last I look at it during a run. However it is good to have for warmups and all that, setting idle when racing at different altitudes, etc etc.

It's real important to keep the idle, launch, and shift rpm's consistent from run to run, otherwise your tuner has no idea what the heck the other changes (fuel, clutch, etc) he made did. The only reason to change the rpm's run to run would be a tuning change, so you'd want to know what they were anyways, correct?
