What's a good indication that the Sprag or Inner and Outter race needs to be replaced? Or is it just a consumable item? I know its usually the Inner race is what wears first.

This is for a Lenco Drive.

Yes, the inner race is consumable. If it is grooved or rough or blued then it needs to be replaced. They should look like new. Call Matt Moore at APT. phone 619.933.8636 They make excellent Lenco parts for less money.

Let me find out tomorrow. We have been getting Lenco parts from Matt for awhile now and their quality is great. APT builds stronger parts for the Lenco reverser that stops that breakage problem.

Hey thanks Rob. If only they could come up with a sprag eliminator that did not need springs every 4-6 runs !.......

While we are on the topic, anyone have any info on the mechanical diode vs. the helo sprag vs. the sprag eliminator? Some years ago I seen a drag boat that had an air line to the rear portion of the case and they said it was an air assisted mechanical diode. Any info on this? Of all the problems with the Lenco, the sprag hasn’t been an issue for us.

You do realize of course now that you have made that public statement Mr. Murphy is going to send you a sprag failure? :). Take Care.

I'll add to what has been mentioned. On the element itself, you are looking primarily at the inner part and looking to see if the rounded part of the element is developing a flat spot. If enough elements lose this rounded edge, they lose the ability to lock and 'flip.' This flat spot is usually easy to see, it will be 'shiny' most of the time. If the shine is close to 50% or more across multiple elements, it's time to replace.

I have heard of teams running an oversize inner race with a used element.

If anyone wants some sprag eliminator assemblies, I have some for sale!
