The 23 year old Massey, who was selected as the replacement driver for drag race legend Gene Snow, trails current points leader and defending World Champion Steve Torrence by a mere two rounds of competition.

Massey, from Fort Worth, Texas, qualified the 'Snowman' A/Fuel Dragster third in the field with a 5.370 second elapsed time at 260.21 mph. He defeated David Brounkowski in the first round before losing to James Thompson in the semifinals after his mount went into severe tireshake.

"It just shook the tires real hard at 1.8 seconds," explained Snow. "It shook hard enough it broke something in the ignition and shut itself off. There was nothing the kid could do from that point."

"It left hard, and I could tell all eight cylinders were lit and it was just starting to haul the mail," said Massey. "Then it started to chatter the tires, which was followed by immediate severe tireshake. It rung my bell pretty good."

Undaunted, the team will head north to Topeka in search of that illusive first win.

"We're going to test on Thursday to make sure we got the ignition problems out of it and to keep working on the tune-up," stated Massey. "We need to gather some points to keep pace with Torrence. We're only two rounds back right now, so hopefully we can get back in the points lead after this weekend."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
