Massey wins second straight in Rusk

<img border="0" src="http://insidetopalcohol.com/massey.jpg" width="360" height="270" align="left">RUSK, Texas - Red-hot NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster rookie Spencer Massey won his second straight event on the Lucas Oil Divisional trail during this past weekend's Division 4 event in Rusk, Texas. Massey wheeled drag race legend Gene Snow's A/Fuel dragster to a wire-to-wire win, qualifying No. 1 and defeating Tom Conway's interim driver Lee Callaway in the final, moving to fourth in national points.

Massey, from Ft. Worth, Texas, took the top spot in qualifying with a track-record 5.368 second pass at 264.39 mph. The event originally started three weeks ago, but heavy rains forced the event to be rescheduled following qualifying. Massey received a competition bye in round one due to the short field, cutting a near-perfect .004 light and running a planned-shutoff 5.812 at only 192.66 mph. With neither Marty Thacker or Karl Brounkowski making the trip back for the rescheduled event, Massey received another bye in the semifinals, cutting another stellar .008 light and running a 5.650 at 251.11 mph.

His final round opponent would be No. 2 qualifier Lee Callaway. Callaway, who was named the interim driver for Conway Racing following the abrupt split between Tom Conway and his driver Steve Torrence. Massey once again relied on his reactions to gain a sizable lead off the line with a .016 to .076 holeshot and never looked back, taking the win with a 5.471 at 263.00 mph to Callaway's 5.476 at 262.74. The win was Massey's second-straight in Division 4 competition and vaulted him into the Division 4 points lead over Torrence, who does not plan to return to TAD competition this year.

"It was kind of odd to get two byes like that," said Massey. "But we'll definitely take them. We shut off early on what would have been a 5.40 run in the first round, then we dropped a cylinder in the second round. I was really hoping we didn't drop another cylinder in the final, because you know Conway's car is going to run a .40 something. It took off, and it pulled good all the way down track, so I knew that it was on a good run. Gene and Vernon [Wilde] gave me a good hot rod and we were able to get the win."

After two-straight wins on the divisional level, the Gene Snow Racing team will turn it's focus on the national level, as they will head west for the "Western Swing," when the tour competes in Seattle and Sonoma on back-to-back weekends. Massey, currently fourth in national standings will head to Seattle for the Schuck's Auto Supply Nationals, July 21-23.

"After taking these two wins on the divisional level and making the semifinals at the Topeka national, we really want to get into a national event final round," commented Massey. "Gene has given me such a good car to drive, it's really been a dream come true this year. Hopefully we can keep adding to that dream with a national event win."
