Massey hoping to cap championship season with Noble win

NOBLE, Okla. - The pressure is finally off rookie NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Spencer Massey. He can finally quit looking over his shoulder during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series closer at Thunder Valley Raceway Park in Noble, Okla. After clinching the championship by making the finals of the Houston event, Massey and his team can focus on winning and gaining national points.

Massey, 24, of Ft. Worth, enters this weekend's event fourth in national points. With the national championship out of reach, Massey is locked in a battle for third with Duane Shields.

"Hopefully we can do well and represent ourselves as the new Division 4 Champion," said Massey. "It's quite an honor, and there are some really great racers who have held that position, so hopefully we can maintain that image. We just want to do what we've done all year. We need to win to pick up points. If we can do that, we'll be in striking distance of third place. Whatever happens, it's been a dream season."

Massey not only wants to finish the season strong for points, but to serve as a possible springboard into the professional ranks. In just his first season behind the wheel of an A/Fuel Dragster, Massey has quickly garnered the reputation of one of the most feared drivers on the starting line. His reaction time average is among the leaders of the class.

"I think every young driver dreams of making it into the fuel ranks," stated Massey. "You just try to do your best week in and week out. That's what you have to do to win. After it's all said and done, you hope some of the decision makers in the pro ranks notice."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, followed by two sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
