Massey wins Jegs Sportsman All-Stars race

JOLIET, Ill. - Defending NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Spencer Massey added another impressive accomplishment to his young career by taking home the win during this past weekend's Jegs Sportsman All-Stars event held in conjunction with the Torco Race Fuels Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago. The Jegs Sportsman All-Stars event pits the top racers from each of NHRA's seven geographical divisions together at a race within a race to battle for the prestigious All-Stars crown.

Massey, 24, of Ft. Worth, Texas, qualified fourth for the All-Star field with a 5.353 at 270.00 mph. In round one, he defeated the Division 5 All-Star Richard Putz with a 5.416 at 265.74 mph, then defeated Division 1 All-Star John Finke with a 5.420 at 268.33 mph.

Massey's final round opponent would be last year's All-Star champ, Marty Thacker from Division 3. Both cars stayed locked together down track, but it was Massey prevailing at the finish line by a mere .009 of a second with a 5.379 at 267.27 mph to Thacker's right-there 5.396 at 265.48 mph.

"It's very exciting to be one of the few to get to run this race, much less win it," said Massey. "It's a great honor to win this race. You're going up against the best of the best in the country. I could see him until about 1000' but when it's that close you still don't know who won. The win light in the shut down area wasn't working, so I didn't know who won."

"It was hot and the air was bad on Saturday," Massey continued. "I had to pedal it in the first round, but luckily we still got the win."

The battle between Massey and Thacker continued Sunday morning as they were paired to race each other in the first round of the Torco Race Fuels Route 66 Nationals. Massey prevailed again with a 5.283 at 267.53 mph. His story-book weekend ended in the second round to No. 1 qualifier Kate Harker who ran a 5.290 at 266.27 mph which was too much for Massey's game 5.429 at 268.76 mph.

Despite losing in the second round, Massey retained the national points lead following the event. Last season, Massey finished third in national points.
