I would like to log actual spark timing in degrees (the actual timing that results, as opposed to the commanded timing), during a run. What would be a good way to accomplish this?

Call Ron Armstrong at Racepak. They've been doing it for years.

    data-timimg in degrees

the only data recorder that has the ability to track timing as you go down the track that I know of is the racepack pro-2,which cost about 15,000 dollars !!! it has a sensor on the camshaft, along with a extra crank trigger that is used as a sensor .it uses the cam sensor as a starting place to track, then compares it to what the crank sensor tells it.most top fuel cars use this setup-two crank triggers -one for each mag 44,then a third sensor at the bottom of the crank degree wheel to track timing as it is taken out or put in.I think I am correct in the description of how it works-but I could be wrong.

Hey flash, thanks. What you've described is kind of what I was expecting. I may run a #1 inductive pickup and a crank angle encoder. Just didn't know if there was an easier way. Will talk with Racepak on Monday.

You can now record your timing with a V-500 series Racepak. We just used ours two weeks ago. It works great!!

    pro1-b

racepak makes a pro1-b now that allows you to monitor timing....so it's not just limited to the pro 2.

we can now monitor timing. it no longer requires a cam sensor. i believe all it needs is a magnet on the degree wheel.

For all of you racers that have an RPM computer call Randy. He told me that he developed a system oveer 5 years ago to do this for AutoMeter and could not give one away. He said he can make his Data logger do this no problem if his customers just asked. He also would like to know what the racers would like to see in a dash. Post it here or call him and let him know.
