    Hey Will,

What the heck is with all the spam attacks the last few days? I think I deleted like 10 posts just this morning between the Pit Buzz section and the Classifieds section. I would have got the ones in the Tech Questions section but for some reason hav lost the ability to moderate in that section only:confused:.

you can ban an entire ip range if its coming from japan or somewhere wheres theres obviously no interest in alky racing. I get jap email spam generated within my own site from a construction estimate requests form i use. so i just edit my htaccess file and ban the lot of them.

    spam

they come in spurts, and murphys law would have them hitting it while i'm at the track and on the road. it's a weird deal. they're pretty easy to spot when they register, and they are usually dormant for a day or so before they start spamming. usually i check the new registrations daily and delete the user before they hit.

luckily so far it's been relatively harmless spam....

i read up on some methods such as limiting how quick a new member can register. ie, you have to wait 30 seconds to hit 'register'. some of these bots do it pretty quick, so thats one way of weeding them off.

oddly enough, they only pick on the alcohol site. they don't mess with the comp and bracket board.

Seems to have more to do with ease of registration. I'm a moderator on the fishing website www.kokaneefishingforum.com and we went through about 6 weeks of getting hammered by the spammers. I banned hundreds of phony members and countless threads pushing viagra and porn. The admin was finally able to tighten up the registration process and things have finally settled down.

I think that the only way you can keep people like that out is by having it set were you have to approve them. I have a couple sites setup like that and you can keep a lot out.
