So this winter I'm buying a local funny car rolling chassis. It has a 1 of 1 body of a 1970 Superbird. Older chassis, but it has a ton of history at my local track and I grew up watching it. Still can't believe I'm pulling the trigger and buying it, never thought I'd get into a funny car.

My initial plan was to go a non-conventional route and use a Gen 3 hemi and just run my local super pro bracket class. Not out to set records, just have fun with it and do something different.

But I'm working on a work contract, that if it gets confirmed I may be able to go up to top alcohol. Looking at something like a Pro Line Hemi

    So a couple questions....

Is the Pro Line hemi approved for top alcohol? Or what would be a better option? Looking for ease of maintenance. Want the ability to make enough HP for top alcohol, but be able to de-tune it to a high 6 sec car for my local bracket class.

And two, with the recent change for bodies allowing 1969 model years and newer, would a 1 of 1 body of a 1970 superbird qualify for top alcohol or does it have to be a commercially available body of an older model car?

I'm assuming a funny car chassis in general would all be legal for top alcohol speeds? Previous owner never went lower than high 6s so I think just always paid for a 6.0 tag. Seen that lots up here where a chassis is good for say 6.0 but they only pay for a 7.50 tag to save costs.

did somebody build a real superbird or are you talking about dave and sherrie bodnarchuks ford tempo bodied car that they modified to look like a superbird ? also prolines hemis are 4.9 borespace and not legal for top alcohol .you wont be legal for alcohol , heritage , top dragster or top sportsman . i have a 57 chevy bodied fc and the only place we can run is funny car chaos . at least they allow any engine , any power adder , any fuel and any year body . hope this helps !!

Modified body. Yes, the Bodnarchuks. Good family friends and they only live a mile up the road from my parents.

The NHRA top alcohol class wouldn't be a main focus for me, it would just be nice to have it as an option for events if I decide to go on a USA tour with the car.

I may still end up going with a gen 3 at first just to get my feet wet with only 1000hp. Then when I upgrade to the big motor, the gen 3 goes in my street car.

Our super pro class only goes to 7.0, but it's a member run track with 2 other cars knocking on the door of 6's so it's likely just a matter of time until the class has an ET break of 6.0 or 6.50.

So detune a big motor and keep the RPMs down to save parts for running the bracket class.

Buy a used BAE or AJPE from a reputable seller. Best bet is find a TAFC racer that cycles out their stuff and get decent parts and a little bit of guidance. You’ll be money ahead in the long run. I highly doubt that body would be accepted in TAFC as it’s not what it started as.
