I use a small primer pump with a nitrous selenoid to prime my motor, but within seconds, they die. Two in row. It was a Mr gasket pump, rated for "all fuels"

What small primer pumps have you guys used with Methanol

    Thanks

    priming

I use a crew member. unless you have no help, teach (learn) how to keep a constant squirt going from a squeeze bottle till the pump picks up. my tank is higher so the pump is flooded to start with. its easy. there are many makers of good quality electric pumps if you need one. holley, BG, system, etc.

What do they do when the pumps die? Does the motor quit or do they start leaking?

about 15 years ago we started using a little Holley blue pump as a primer, it's still going strong. just take the bottom plate off at the end of the season, and clean the little screen in there. i run WD-40 through it if the car sits for over a week or 2. hope this helps

i've heard of guys using the little holley pumps too without any problem

fwiw tho... i hear a lot of guys talking about using wd-40 with alcohol (like lubing their system, lines, pumps, etc) but i would NOT put wd-40 into my system.

i USED TO use wd-40 too... until i saw some wd-40 and alcohol mix in a clear container outside to the motor. it got all cloudy and kinda thick looking. and i thought... 'damn i sure wouldn't want that in my fuel system'

so just a suggestion... use marvel mystery oil instead. great lube and it mixes into fuels pretty readily

We use a Carter rotary (vane) style pump, been on there for years, much more reliable than the crew-guy who was always late :D

I used a gm in tank pump 28-36 psi on a injected bbc I use to have
and it was actuated by a momentary on/off button on my button panel,
and it worked flawlessly the single line was plumbed into the top of the
    intake plenum w a 1/4 line.
I use to give it 2 , 2 second purges and would fire right up and run off
    the motors pump.

    pump

I use the mr. gasket. I have a 1 qt. jr dragster tank, which I fill with racing fuel. So I prime on it and then goes to alky. 2 yrs. so far on pump no problems.

I'm with Canter. I want to know what happens.
Are you using gas or alcohol to prime? Is your solenoid acting up and giving the impression the pump stops? If using alky does the solenoid have an alky compatible piston in it?

I have been using a holley red pump with a NOS fuel solenoid for about 10 years now to prime the motor. I think I've replaced each, one time only. It only takes a quick squirt to get the motor running.

instead of a fuel solenoid, we run ours out of the pump....through a one way poppet valve....to the motor....seems to work for us.

Darren, what would stop the vacuum in the hat pulling fuel past that poppet at idle or especially when you let up?

    poppet

I have seen the poppet and was going to try it. But my concern for keeping it closed after start up was the main concern. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

You need the solenoid. It positively shuts off and the vacuum in the hat will not pull fuel from the primer line. I have mine plumbed right into the extra port on the hat distribution block.

    Mike......
i really have no idea....never thought about it. it has a pretty stout spring in it, i just took it for granted that it was shutting off. we have always been able to make changes to the fuel system and get the car to respond in the right direction too. you have me re-thinking things now.....i will have to investigate things a little further.

We run the little Mr. Gasket pump which draws from the fuel inlet under the pump and pushes it to the Enderle primer check in the hat block. Have a momentary switch next to the pump just in the front of the motor and one in the car (just in case we forget the bottle). Been running this pump for two years and have zero problems, have never lubed it either.

Mr. Gasket makes two little pumps and if I remember right, the pressure is the only difference. I use the low pressure unit and it sounds like the old Stewart Warner pumps, tick, tick ,tick. Works great and doesn't push too much fuel.

    Thanks.

I had a similar problem, it was the nitrous solenoid. I turned the solenoid around [ switched the IN and OUT ports], never ruined another primer pump. On an injection setup, it is the higher pressure and primer pump is the lower pressure side. This solenoid only took 50 lbs to open one direction, the other direction it could hold hundreds of pounds.
