Cowie looking to build points lead in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. – Current NHRA Division 6 Top Alcohol Dragster points leader Shawn Cowie and his Mundies Towing backed team head into this weekend’s Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Heartland Park in Topeka, Ks., hoping to break the tie they are in with Joey Severance and build a points lead. He enters this weekend as the defending event champion, and would love to make it two in a row at Heartland Park.

Cowie, 26, of Burnaby, B.C., is hot off a runner-up finish at last weekend’s Division 6 event in Billings, Mont., and hopes to build on that this weekend. This weekend is the second leg in a three race, three week swing that will end at next weekend’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, the biggest event in all of drag racing.

“It’s good to come back to this event after winning it last year,” said Cowie. “It would be nice to be able to defend our title here and pick up some points. It should be a pretty stout field here this weekend, so it’s going to be a fun race. We’re looking forward to it.”

The points chase for the Division 6 Top Alcohol Dragster Championship is a very tight one with only 31 points separating first place from fifth. Competitors racing for the Division Championship can claim their best five of the first eight divisional events they attend, including up to two out of division races.

Cowie has attended six events this season, and must advance past the first round to increase his points total. A win would gain him 53 points. His final event to claim divisional points will be at Division 6’s final event in Medford, Ore., Sept. 26-27.

“We’ll just have to see how it goes,” commented Cowie. “We’re tied with Joey, but we’re really behind him because he has fewer races. The points are pretty tight right now, so it’s really up for grabs. We’re just going to do our best this weekend, pick up as many points as we can and make a good showing for our sponsors Mundies Towing, United Petroleum, Kendall Motor Oil and Lordco Auto Parts.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with one session, followed by a final session Saturday morning. Final eliminations will conclude the event Saturday evening.
