Cowie enters Indy on the heels two straight finals

CLERMONT, Ind. – NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shawn Cowie and his family’s Mundies Towing backed team enter this weekend’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis with a hot hand. The young Canadian driver enters the biggest event in all of drag racing on the heels of two-straight final round appearances and is hoping for one more this weekend.

Cowie, 26, of Burnaby, B.C., solidified his Division 6 points lead with his second-straight final on the divisional level, scoring a runner-up at last weekend’s Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. There he qualified his Bill Moore tuned blown alcohol dragster on the pole with a 5.354 at 254.52 mph. He took out Jared Dreher and recent Brainerd national event winner Brandon Lewis on his way to the final. Cowie’s semifinal round win saw the team experience heavy engine damage and resulted in a thrash to make the final.

Cowie squared off with Aaron Tatum’s injected-nitro dragster in the final. He ran a 5.370 at 268.76 mph, but was unable to hold off Tatum’s 5.281 at 276.92 mph. The runner-up moved him to seventh in national standings and extended his points lead in Division 6 to 32 points over Joey Severance.

“It was another good weekend for us,” said Cowie. “We would have liked to have taken the win, but if we can keep making finals, we’ll be in good shape. I really have to thank Jim Whiteley’s crew and all the people that helped us get ready for the final. It was quite a thrash, and we wouldn’t have made it without them.”

With the best of the best set to do battle at Indy this weekend, Cowie looks forward to the challenge of racing the best in the class.

“We don’t come out this far east much,” said Cowie. “We’re getting to race new people, and this race has some of the best racers in the class. It will be tough, but our car is running good right now and the crew is doing a great job as well. Hopefully we can do well and make a good showing for our sponsors Mundies Towing, United Petroleum, Kendall Motor Oil and Lordco Auto Parts.”

Qualifying for the alcohol cars begins on Friday with two sessions, followed by one session on Saturday and one final session Sunday morning. Eliminations begin with round one on Sunday evening and final eliminations will conclude the event on Monday.
