Cowie gains points lead with Montana runner-up

ACTON, Mont. – NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster young gun Shawn Cowie grabbed a share of the Division 6 points lead with a runner-up showing during this past weekend’s Division 6 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Yellowstone Drag Strip just outside of Billings, Mont. Cowie and the Mundies Towing backed team also moved to seventh in national points following the strong showing.

Cowie, 26, of Burnaby, B.C., qualified his Bill Moore tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster second in the field with a 5.490 second elapsed time at 262.54 mph. In round one, he defeated Kevin Wayman with a 5.513 at 261.93 mph, and then defeated defending Division 5 Champion Richard Putz with a 5.491 at 261.22 mph to set up the final with national points leader Jim Whiteley.

The final was a battle of the No. 1 and 2 qualifiers. Cowie stayed consistent with a 5.533 at 261.78 mph, but could not catch Whiteley’s 5.488 at 260.61 mph for the win.

“The weekend went pretty well,” said Cowie. “We didn’t get the win, but we didn’t do too bad, either. That .38 Whiteley ran was pretty stout. The track was really good all weekend, they had a good crowd and the weather was nice, so it was a fun weekend. We’re glad we were able to make a good showing for Mundies Towing, United Petroleum, Kendall Motor Oil and Lordco Auto Parts.”

In what promises to be a tight points battle to the end for the Division 6 Top Alcohol Dragster Championship, Cowie is now tied with Joey Severance for the Division 6 lead. Competitors in the Top Alcohol categories can claim points at their best five out of the first eight divisional events they attend towards the Divisional Championship. They can also claim the best two out of the first three out of division events towards that total.

“We’re tied for first, but Joey’s really ahead of us,” stated Cowie. “We’ve been to six races, and he’s been to four, so he still has a full race to claim, and we’re replacing races right now. It gives us a little more motivation going into our next couple of races. We’ll just have to see how the next few races go.”

The Cowie Racing team will stay on the road as they head straight to Topeka, Ks., for this weekend’s Division 5 event there, then from there they will go to the biggest drag race of them all, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Aug. 27- Sept. 1.
