Cowie looking to close ground in Acton

ACTON, Mont. – Young gun NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shawn Cowie and his Mundies Towing backed team will be looking to make a late season points surge with a strong showing at this weekend’s Division 6 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Yellowstone Drag Strip just outside of Billings, Mont. Cowie enters the event ranked tenth nationally and fifth in a tight points battle for the Division 6 crown.

Cowie, 26, of Burnaby, B.C., has attended five divisional events this year, but has much room for improvement, as he has two first round losses and a non-qualifying effort on his record. He’s still in the title hunt on the strength of a runner-up finish at his home track in Mission, B.C., and a recent semifinal showing in Woodburn, Ore. Competitors can claim their best five out of the first eight events they attend towards the Division Championship, giving Cowie the opportunity to replace his worst three events. He points out this weekend is crucial in keeping his title hopes alive.

“It’s pretty much make it or break it time,” said Cowie. “This last little road swing we’re going on is really going to determine how the year goes for us. From Montana, we’re going down to Topeka [Ks.] then to I ndy for the U.S. Nationals.”

The event also poses the opportunity to make up ground as current points leader Bayer and his teammate Justin Davis, who is currently third, will not be in attendance as they will be racing at the Toyo Tires Nationals in Reading, Pa. Yellowstone’s relatively high altitude has historically favored the blown alcohol combination.

“It should be pretty interesting this weekend,” stated Cowie. “Bayer and Davis won’t be there, but there should be some good cars there nonetheless. We hear [National points leader Jim] Whiteley is going to be there, so we’ll have our work cut out for us. Not to mention the other tough cars we normally race here in Division 6. Hopefully=2 0we can pick up some points and make a good showing for our sponsors Mundies Towing, United Petroleum, Kendall Motor Oil and Lordco Auto Parts.

“Our goal coming into the year was to win the Division 6 Championship and finish in the top ten,” Cowie added. “Hopefully a good showing here will set the pace for the rest of the year for us.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with one qualifying session followed by two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
