O’Bannon looking for strong hometown showing in Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – After finishing tenth in national points standings last year, NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Sean O’Bannon and the Jack O’Bannon Racing team hope to make a strong showing at their home track during this weekends’ Kragen O’Reilly Winternationals=2 0at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif. The team is also pleased to announce their sixth season with Forest River RV’s as a sponsor.

O’Bannon, from nearby Ontario, Calif., is excited about getting back in the saddle after a strong test outing in Phoenix two weeks ago that netted a 5.65 at 258 mph.

“We made a lot of progress last year,” said O’Bannon. “Jeff Lirones is taking over as Crew Chief for us this year. We went out to Phoenix two weeks ago just to make some shakedown runs and get back to square one. We weren’t trying anything new. We just wanted to make some solid laps and knock the rust off everybody. We were happy with the results, so hopefully we can start off with a good solid run on Thurs day and build from there.

“This is our hometown race, so we always try to do our best,” O’Bannon continued. “We’re very pleased to have Forest River RV’s back on board, and we’re going to have a lot of their people out at the track. Also, my dad’s company, Fontana Wood Products is based out here and we have a sky box on the grandstands. We entertain a lot of guests at the two Pomona races, and it would be great to get them down in the winner’s circle on Sunday.”

After two years of running as a two car team with Alexis DeJoria, the team will return to a single car team as DeJoria has started her own team.

“We wish Alexis the best of luck in her new endeavor,” stated O’Bannon. “It will definitely simplify things for us and allow us to concentrate on one car, which we haven’t been able to do in a while. I think we’re all looking forward to trying to get a good jump on the season in Pomona.”

Qualifying begins on Thursday for the alcohol cars with two more sessions on Friday. Eliminations begin with round one on Saturday and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
